i usually stop huntin around end of April or beginnin of May and then start back up around September. I see a lot of you that hunt all summer though. Is the huntin good enough in the summer months to make it worth dealin with the bugs, snakes, heat, humidity, etc.?? Is it actually a better time to start a young dog? How often do you go during these months and where do you draw the line on not going? I was thinkin about tryin it with a dog that needs to get some more time in the woods instead of not huntn for 3-4 mos

I think it is best to keep hunting them all year but no the hunting's not better in late summer it can get pretty tough for the dog to. I wouldn't over do it with a young dog in july and august but I keep hunting a couple nights a week anyhow.

yep when I was MUCH YOUNGER lol our dogs never stopped going to the woods . just be care full and try and hunt the bottoms where it usually a little cooler of an evening . start out slow and let the dogs get acclimated to the temp. and you should be fine . bug spray is a must lol and walk a lot with your light as low as possible to keep the june bugs out of your face .

A lot of people say not running during the summer months is bad for the dogs but we have never hunted much after March. And all of our dogs start right back up the next kill season. Like they were never off.

In saying that. I hunt a lot more than most in the winter 5+ nights a week. But here in sc the rattlesnakes and humidity get me thinkin fish instead of coon in the summer lol.

Down here in Ms. and Al. we do a lot , if not most, of our training during the very hot summer and earlyh fall... Some nights during an excissive heat wave you just have to sit it out for a few nights...

A long time coonhunter taught me that when you make one tree or about an hour's worth of hunting, whichever suits you, in the dead of summer is long enough. A night or two a week is good.

Thanks to everyone for their input on this. All we hunt in around here is mtns. If its flat its usually a cutover. Not unusual to take a half hour or more to get to a tree and that could be too long on a hot nite. If I tried it I would stick to hntn some creeks where we got some feeders and hope for some easy tracks. Just wanted to see what some of yall did during the hot months. Thanks again.

You ask a very valid question. I think the best answer to most of these questions is "Let the Dog Tell You". If your hunting starts to drop off due to conditions then maybe you should cut back, especially if it is a young dog or you see any negative effect on the young dog. You could have a very wet summer or very dry summer. See how you dog handles the conditions and adjust. Last year I kept records more than I ever did on my hunts and I can't explain this but here is something I saw. I had a young dog and was looking forward to the fall of the year. As soon as our temperatures dropped and what I thought should be better hunting she did some negative things she had not done before.

just make sure to hunt around water, and don't let them tree a very long time. Love starting pups out in the summer, most coon of the year, and much easier to tell for sure fast game.

never had a problem with hunting in the summer myself , never really worried about snakes and stuff till I got older either , but that's cause I am not as fast as I used to be !
we always hunt the branches and ponds , try to stay as close to the dogs as we can so there not staying treed to long . I wouldn't turn hounds a lose down a road in the summer cause that's where shaky tails like to lay and sun or just feel the head off the road , Hunt smart and you should be ok jmop
