Georgia coon hunters

Got a question. In the state of Georgia the rule book says you can run dogs even after coon season is over either on private lands or on certain WMA's that are listed in the book till March 19th but you cannot have any firearm at all except a pistol with shot shells or blank cartridges. Do you have to have a liscense to carry a pistol into the woods while you run your dogs ? A liscense to carry ?

Gun carry permit. According to the Ga rulebook, even when it's not coon season you can have a pistol with shot shell with you but my question is do you need a gun permit to carry for that ?

You must have a hunting license for sure. I believe you are ok without the conceal carry permit, as long as the weapon is visable. I know that's the way it is for general public, but then again we are talking about some WMA's and they make the rules for them as they go at times. Good Question Jason.

Yesser good question

I think there is a lot of information given on this board that are opinions and not factual. I understand the concealed weapon law BUT as Rock stated NOW U are talking about another ANIMAL when U discuss the D N R requirements for a WMA. NOW my opinion, I think U can only carry a pistol with blanks on a WMA when training a bird dog or at least that is how I think it reads, therefore U would not need a gun permit when doing this, and that is limited to only a few WMA where that is permitted. BUT AGAIN MY OPINION ONLY . H L

I would say call WRD and get an answer. Only problem we have ran into with getting a WRD opinion is that about 1/2 the DNR Rangers who patrol the areas are not real familiar with the requirements of said WMA. Most are really good folks, but with each WMA having so many different requirements, you may run into a Ranger who might not be as up to date as he/she should be, and then the real trouble starts.

O.C.G.A. § 16-11-126

(f) Any person with a valid hunting or fishing license on his or her person, or any person not required by law to have a hunting or fishing license, who is engaged in legal hunting, fishing, or sport shooting when the person has the permission of the owner of the land on which the activities are being conducted may have or carry on his or her person a handgun or long gun without a valid weapons carry license while hunting, fishing, or engaging in sport shooting.

(g) Notwithstanding Code Sections 12-3-10, 27-3-1.1, 27-3-6, and 16-12-122 through 16-12-127, any person with a valid weapons carry license may carry a weapon in all parks, historic sites, or recreational areas, as such term is defined in Code Section 12-3-10, including all publicly owned buildings located in such parks, historic sites, and recreational areas, in wildlife management areas, and on public transportation; provided, however, that a person shall not carry a handgun into a place where it is prohibited by federal law

If you posses a Carry Permit you have the right to carry on a WMA anytime you want...that permit doesn't expire because you walk onto public land... You can carry a handgun concealed or open and a Longgun open anywhere stated in the above GA Legal Code

Ga carry . org sued to have WMA's listed as they shouldn't be treated as any different than going to the local city park

It is against the law to possess a firearm during a closed hunting season for an WMA area, except on designated shooting ranges, unless such a firearm is unloaded and stored in a motor vehicle so as to not be readily accessible, except that any person possessing a Weapons Carry License that is valid in this state pursuant to OCGA §§ 16-11-126(f) or 16-11-129 may carry such firearm subject to the limitations of OCGA §§ 16-11-126 and 16-11-127, except where prohibited by federal law.

And its a fact that you can carry with a permit anytime you want on a wma with it loaded any way you want it loaded but you gotta have that permit. See its for protection purposes. The head honcho up here on this wma at my house even says we can train once small game season opens but it takes a feller not to bright to hunt these rattle snake infested hills of Dawson Forest in Aug.
