I would say yes........ if they get to themselves with coons and stay out of trouble (slick trees, leaving trees, returning after struck, Handler trying to pitch them when they know they really haven't barked just hoping for 50 strike) LOL

my answer is YES sometimes you can

U can win w/a dog like that, in the beginning, but sooner or later u will get "called out" or if u gotta conscience u will stop hunting a dog like that.Mite even make it a Ntch......but I don't think u can tip toe thru 5 Ntch. cast and grand it out.....maybe u can but I doudt it.

I promise it can be done..! I've always felt more confident hunting a tight mouthed dog. Seems like I draw more minus hunting an open trailing dog.

Yep, and so should all those striking a babble, striking the wrong hound and ill dogs...but I see way too many that won't.

If the silent dog can get deep most of the time, alone and have a coon, then it's no problem. We owned a grnt that won a state hunt that was nearly 100% silent. But was as I just described.

I know there are alot of pluses to a silent mouth dog and alot of people let em get away with em .
IMO 98% tight> is silent but maybe im weird.
Dont know bout ya'll but i like to "HEAR" a good race rather than watch the race on my garmin...... Who dont like to hear a good hound bawl on track burning one up ?????
to each his own i guess........

Oh Yea my favorite topic, LOL

I'm with you Toad Hill, 98% in my book is silent. Many people say a dog is tight when in fact what they are really saying is they are (predominantly) silent on trail. That is what I call trying the big city attorney approach. Change the word so that it doesn't sound as offensive. Now we all know there is no real teeth in any rule that tells you when a dog is to be considered silent. The wording is intentionally grey as it is written leaving room for personal interpretation from the individual judge. That is a shame as far as I'm concerned. I think the rule should be explicit. Just as you are required to strike a dog ON or BEFORE the 3rd bark. A dog should be required to give 3 or more track barks on at least 1 of 3 tracks to be considered NOT SILENT. (Predominantly) silent on trail IS to be considered a SCRATACHABLE FAULT. Babbling is to be considered a MINUSABLE fault. By looking at the two degrees of discipline, from these two unwanted traits, it should be obvious to everyone which of these two traits is the most undesirable from UKC standards.

We all know the babbling rule IS being enforced much more often that the silent rule.

So yes You can win with a silent dog. It is being done every weekend somewhere. It is a personal choice as to how you want to win a competition hunt. I do not like a silent dog and do not feel they should be allowed to compete against HOUNDS in a competition hunt, as hounds are required to be open trailing.

How are you or the judge going to prove that ? Strike the dog and tree it....theres several people hunting still dogs, some will hunt nothing but one. They are normally accurate as can be and dont draw no attention from all the modern day me-tooers.

I have one that went from nothing to Grnite in about a dozen hunts with 4th strikes and first trees. If they get alone and have the coon they can win anywhere.
The tighter the better for me,barkin is for beagles.

If they do scratch you question it take it to the master of hounds and simply say I struck before I treed and that what the rules state I have also graded 2 like this try ed once to scratch me and that exactly what I asked them they over turned it i was taking second and third that whole night by the time theirs truly struck mine was treed

imo if your a true comp hunter or a pleasure hunter part of the hunt is to listen to a good track .. if you like a still mouth dog you obviously dont like the most enjoyable part of a hunt is to listen to a good dog work a track to a tree. get mad at me all you all want but thats my opinion. yea i have been beat by a still mouth dog running the same track my dog run. mine opens an they run with on same track. 200 beats 175 all night. the htx hunts states dog must open on track . in my opinion. one bark an then 300 yrds later tree. is not opening on track. thats just simply saying i smelt something..

Yes it can win and probably get away from the babbling barking idiots so they cant get there in time for many points. Specially in a kc with a tree count down. One ground bark is all it has to make to prove its not silent. Then not a thing anybody can do.

I can't stand a dog that barks every time his foot hits the ground but I love to hear a good bawl mouth dog pushing a track at a steady pace then a long dying locate and break over to a steady chop....but I love to coon hunt not just in it to win it!!!!

we hunt under honor rules yet there is no honor ! page 13 of the advisor definition of OPEN (quote) the word "open" in the nite hunts and coon hunting in general, refers to the action of dogs barking on trail. hounds participating in the night hunts are required to be open trailers, meaning that they bark on trail. and we wonder why hunt attendance is down one of the main reasons is honor no one wants to argue with a man with no honor !
