I guess people will buy anything but really, there isn't much to make. You buy a barrel, cut a hole, lay a piece of plywoods inside or not, and you got a doghouse. What you gonna sell other than the barrel? People don't use barrels because they are the best, we use them because they are cheap or free.

The way I make mind, after lots of trial and error is as follows. I measure 14" from the top of the barrel down on the one side and drill a hole. I stick the saw in the hold and cut a "smiley face" up to the top edge and then follow the lip of the barrel to make the door cut out. . If the dog is under a roof in a kennel, this is it. IF not I make a room for the barrel by using 1/4 of another barrel. on the top. I just cut it into a 1/4 then screw it together using hardward and teflon washers. This roof will keep the bedding dry.

I have the K-9 Kondo kit it is has the swinging door the legs that get it off the ground and a vent in the back, it also has a bracket to put a plywood deck ontop for hound to lay on. Door heeps wind rain and snow out stick a piece of furnace filter between the vent cover and barrel to keep blowing snow out stuff straw in for bedding with some cedar. I will see how this works this winter just put together a couple weeks ago.

dog house

I use the barrels, but I frame them in a wood box. I put insulation all around the barrel stuffed to the top and my dogs do great in them. not bad for Michigan winters.

Some of my dogs are pretty big and need a hole that size but the smaller dogs can definitly use a smaller hole.

I disagree, JiM,. Plastic barrels are the best if used correctly. They are certainly air tight except for the door and if a person puts on a flap, they are pretty tight. The key is having them face south and of course, using a lot of straw.

I just put about 6 screws holding the top to the barrel. It's quite strong, i've never had one come off. They have withstood several hurricanes and stayed dry inside without the doors.
