New Prospect

Going to try to keep a log on here of the progression of my new walker Rock..I bought him from a member of this board and couldn't be happier with my purchase. He is 9 months old and from what I understand has tracked and treed a few turn loose coons. has only been hunted a handful of times. shows Spring Creek Rock several times in his papers. haven't been able to get him out yet because of weather but me and him are both sitting on go.

Looking forward to hearing more! Just a reminder just because you can't hunt doesn't mean you can start your training. Down times are a good time to work on some basic obedience, which will be a good way to establish a bond and a good foundation for any future training that may be necessary down the road.

Garret...Fisher is right on...

every day is a lesson for a young dog. Spend as much time as you can with him. Talk with him. Got a buddy with two hounds he lets ride in the truck, spend the night inside on the real bad nites. they even get the couch every once in awhile.
They will flat tree you a coon in any conditions anywhere. They are both voice command.
He doesnt have to use a lead unless he just wants to. It started with what you are doing. They know he's boss, but that time spent makes them want to please him.

Ill try and post his pedigree soon. He is one of the most Spring Creek Rock bred dogs you will find.

keep us posted...
also I am going to send you an old old pic of Finley River Dan who was directly off of Finley River Chief. Spring Creek Rock was a grandson of Finley River chief. You can see the resemblence of Rock and old Finley River Dan.

His mom...widow maker

is a semen littermate to the Frozen Obama dog. They used 17 year old semen from Dual Grand Champion Spring Creek Fred to get your Rocks mom.

He is very well bred........

Dog

Like the blaze face and the specks reminds me of a dog I had out of Bean Blossom Buck. Work with him and make him your best friend and he show you what he can do.

this time of the year you can get a lot accomplished going for walks in the daytime. We got 8" or more of snow and today I took the 4 wheeler out and in one corn field there was 3 coon feeding, coon will move all the time now because they are wore down and hungry! I have started many pups this time of the year!

well took Rock out..he hunted around me pretty good. getting around 50 yards away at the furthest.. stayed busy hunting though.. as we were about to leave we walked up on a Possum.. he chased it around for a minute biting it and letting go.. if I could've caught him I would have walked him away from it but I couldn't.. the possum finally went up a little tree and rock sat down and was hammering away.. I didn't really want to discipline him for this so I just gave him a stern no and put him on lead and we left.

good job.

thats exactly how I would have handled it. Just keep exposing him to coons when you can. riding the roads and turning loose on a hot track till you have him going. He doesnt need any kind of whupping at this young age. He knows what game is for sure.
He is going to be a tree dog no doubt.
good job of training.

He is on the verge of breaking out

any night. When he starts its just going to be on.

Still try a turn loose coon or two at night and pop them out to him and then just keep him in the woods.

I'd say you did the right thing there. I wouldn't do anything about those possums until he's treeing coon.

I hunted this pup about 2 months ago with Rick. Pup didn't mind being by himself. Knocked a couple out to him with my dog. He likes to fight a coon for sure.

thanks for the compliment John

Garret...if you have any training questions you need to shoot John a pm. He is one of the finest young hound trainers I have seen in a while. The proof is in the pudding. He got his first real coondog about 10 or 12 years ago as a weaning pup. and had that rascal sitting fritos on his nose and not eating them till John told him to. When that dog died last year he was one bad hombre that could tree any kind of coon that every walked.
John trained a daughter off of him and she will give you a coon treeing whuppin on most any night. John now has two 20 month old bone pups that sleep in the house most bad nites, ride in the front seat to a competition hunt and john wins with either of them in competition and just pure pleasure hunting. He is doing something right. every dog he has owned has been voice command trained and will tree coons anywhere, anytime.
Bo the grand daddy..John would take him to Sportsmans warehouse on his days off and walk in there without the dog on a leash. How many of us can say we can do that?

Mine would run up a damage bill of about 5 grand in 15 minutes.
thats dog training in my opinion. 3 generations worth.
Thats dog training wisdom a lot of folks should tap in to.

Me and rock got out in the rain a little while tonight. Didn't much happen. This is the second night we've walked into a field full of deer and I walk him over the tracks and him not pay any attention to it. Really hope he keeps that up

Something I like to do, is I will often take 2 hounds.A pup and a hound that is already clicking. I typically drop the pup first alone for 1 drop. Then will hunt the more experienced dog the rest of the night. Any ways I will make note of where of my broke hound got struck and treed, especially if it's an easy coon. The next night I will drop my pup on that spot,at the same time. Often times you can back to that same spot for several weeks and tree that same coon over and over. I don't worry about knocking any out. I only knock out my released coon because they won't stay anyways. Any ways the consistency you can add to your training by having some coon patterned makes all the difference. If you have a good natural pup he can be looking pretty solid after a few short weeks of hunting.
Once the pup is progressing well I will add drops and start mixing in some tougher spots and different terrains.

That sounds like a really good idea. The only problem I have is finding a decent dog to run him with. I don't really have a person I hunt with that has a dog and honestly don't know of too many coon hunters around where I live. Struck out again on trapping a coon. Gonna move my trap to another spot today

best way to catch coon is to bait them into a place with corn, dog food ect..., get them coming in and when the bait is almost gone set your box traps. I have trapped 100's of coon, and peanut butter and jelly works well.
