BETTER YET LEAVE THEM TO RUN ANOTHER DAY. I ONLY GIVE DOGS ONE NOW AND THEN. PUPS ARE ANOTHER STORY. NOW WHEN I HUNT WITH FRIENDS IN THERE HUNTING AREA AND THEY WANT THEM KNOCKED OUT WE KNOCK EM OUT.

We ended up not getting anything for 28 coons. My buddy just gave them to the fur buyer. They said they stopped buying fur on the last day of kill season. Another guy said he would give us a $2.00 average for them.

Trevor, we sold them to Rick Campbell from Malta Oh., he comes up couple times a year and we meet at Bert Oney's house in Greenwich. He buys Mine, Scott Oney, Dick Wesner, and really anyone who shows up and pays cash.

If a man puts up the fur from start to finish you'll never have a good average. Your best coon are late dec. through jan. Anything before and after just brings it down. The best I ever averaged was 18 on my good ones. You'll never get good prices on green pelts especially if they know you hunt with hounds. To many don't kill them dead then let the dogs chew. When that happens they get bite marks that turn red and price goes down. If your dog needs to chew on it make sure its on its belly not the back.

all I hunted was a pup, and only shot the ones out I thought he really worked for, left a lot in trees and never shot more than one out, I need this weather to break to get back in the timber.

Dave

You had a good average, but your coon further north makes a big deference. Better fur, more than likely bigger. IF I kill one 35 inches around here I'm lucky. From where I live a man could drive an hour and find coon that wouldn't even come close to what mine look like. A lot of people think a coon is a coon but the area where you get them plays a lot on how much you'll get for them.

I don't even mess with skinning them. $4 for a jumbo coon. I'll shoot one out for the pups or if my old dog works hard for it. Our coon population is better than I've ever seen it! Hope it stays that way too.

Fur is a commodity, and all commodities are currently down. I don't shoot many coon, but I hater to see prices this low. If no one is shooting them and the population gets too high here, distemper will thin them out quicker than .22 shells, and it isn't as humane.
