Someone else posted about these devices a while back. I have a FLIR weapon sight and worked for a contractor that installed thermal cameras all over Iraq and Afghanistan, so I do know a "little" about them in general. I have not tried or even seen these little add on devices. Thermal Imaging equipment is very expensive and the general rule is that just like night vision, the good ones are expensive and the "cost effective" ones don't work. One thing about them, they do last for a very long time. Regular night vision has a life, the intensifier tube will eventually wear itself out. But thermal devices use a thing called a bolometer, filled with liquid nitrogen. As long as it don't leak out it is good to go. Obviously, there are a lot of other things that can go wrong with the thing.
To answer a few other questions, yes, a thermal image device will tell you if there is an animal in the tree. It will show you exactly where he is and it will do it right through the leaves and branches. It will not show a raccoon on the inside of a hollow. What it wont do is give you a positive ID on what the animal is...a possum, raccoon, house cat, bobcat, woodchuck, gray fox, pine marten, etc. will all just look like a white blob of heat laying there in a ball. I have coon den boxes on my land and because they are only 3/4 plywood if it's cold outside I can tell if an animal is in there. What it does is show difference in temperature. I can see the bottom panel whiter than the sides from his body heat. It wont look through walls like you see in movies.
If this weather would ever break I will try to get some pictures with mine {has a built in digital camera} and post them on here so you guys can see it.
