First hunt I was in,I got sent out with another member in a 2 dog cast. We cut our dogs, I got first strike and first tree. He decided to be a dbag, and wait the 5 min. His dog treed for a full 4 minutes, then left the tree, 50 seconds later mine left. Now all this happened fairly quick and close, my dog knew we were there, and came back into me.

Anyways even though he was playing by the rules, I thought it was pretty dirty to try bury a guy in the first five minutes of, his first hunt.

The dude don't even hunt anymore

Edit: just to clear the air, I haven't had a bad hunt since, typically everyone is friendly, and try there best to be a sportsman.

My very first hunt was pure insanity. One dog climbed a tree, another dog sounded just like mine, we finally figure out the difference between the two. And my dog ended up treeing on his second Illinois Ghost Coon of the night. I was the last one in the cast, with like 5 minutes left. lol, good fun though.

It was snowy/icy night at an rqe. I drew out with a couple highly respected breeders of the walker hound. There is 3 walkers and my bluetick in the cast. First drop I got 2nd strike but when they came trees I couldn't hear her so I told the judge to let me know before the tree closes. Next thing he says is "trees closed" no countdown, no update on the tree time. I took minus there but no big deal I was going against walkers, I can catch up later. Next drop my dog and 2 of the walkers got real deep so we called timeout to get them. We drove around there and I thought I heard my dog to the right but one guy said no I think I heard your dog to the left with mine so I went to the left were his was, I didn't have a garmin yet. When we get there he grabs his dog and says I guess yours isn't here. I go over to where the other guy went and met him walking out (these guys road together). I asked him if he grabbed my dog he said nope but she's in that brush pile I pulled mine out of. I head that direction to grab mine and I look back at the other hunters and there almost at a run to get to there truck. It hadn't been even close to 30 minutes on the timeout yet. They get to the truck and fly out of there to get back with the cast. I get my doggy and get in the truck and go back to where we were supposed to meet. Nobody there. The cast had left me. I'm almost sure that meant to do it. There probably members of the same 'Team'. I called it lesson learned and just went on home. That is the only cast I've ever been in where I got screwed.

My worst cast ever was in the mid 70's when B&T Days was in NC. I was the non-hunting judge for a gr nt ch cast of three T&Ws. We had an alligator in the cast and he walked on two legs. One cast member got so mad at the trouble maker that they almost got into a fight before I got things under control. He questioned my every call and made me doubt myself until the hunt was over, then he became almost a gentleman. I learned that night to always keep control of the cast. If I'm the judge, I'm reasonable, but I'm in control. You may question ANY call as long as you keep it under control.

Drew two buddies and a decent fella one night(NW PA). I was hunting a 10mo old rockstar. After a couple drops my pup had a pretty big lead and the decent fella withdrew because he was way behind. Now its me and the two jokers. The only way they could win the cast was by me taking a bunch of minus, they certainly didn't have any dog power. Three trees in a row with coon in them were scored minus by vote 2 to 1. These fools wouldn't even shine my trees. That pup would have had a 1st place that night but got robbed by two jokers and their crappy dogs. MOH wouldn't do anything because I was simply out voted.

12 years later I'm back into coonhounds.

I'll start by writing that the good casts have always out weighed the bad, so hope no one gets the idea most casts have cheating involved because they don't. BUT anyone who has comp hunted a few years will see the occasional person try to cheat and make for a miserable cast. The cast that will remain my worse ever because I'd never tolerate something like this to take place now days, happened when I was a teenager, nearly 30 years ago, back in the days when there were a LOT of dogs in a hunt and it took a good score to get a first place win. 4 dog cast, I was hunting a 2 year old Bluetick in his first cast. All 4 dogs go in a few hundred yards and get treed together. A dog fight then breaks out and everyone starts running toward them. A guy I'll just refer to as long legged is in the lead. The judge falls down a hill but everyone else keeps going so I keep following the long legged guy, who gets to the tree first. When I get there my dog and the dog of a guy that hitched a ride with us are treeing together just fine. Other 2 dogs are gone. When the judge got there the long legged guy says "I saw it all the Bluetick is the trouble maker" The judge says your dog is scratched for fighting. Well I may have been young but I had some fire in me and had read the rules, plus I had my short tempered USAF retired Master Sargent father back at the truck who I was pretty sure could and would have pounded these 2 into the ground if things got too out of hand, so I told the judge the He.. my dog is scratched, U are the judge and U didn't see anything and don't have a clue what really happened in here. He threw his light in my face and screamed at me about hunting mean dogs bla bla bla. The long legged guy then said well lets just let him withdraw, which I did as did the guy riding with us because he didn't like the turn of events either. The long legged guy then went and ran his dog down, led him back to the tree, found the coon and they plussed him! Then he and the judge cut their 2 loose again. They struck and treed and broke out in a fight. I said well looks like your going to have to write your dogs up and cast is over. They said well once the dogs get ralled up there isn't really anything U can do to keep them calm. The judge then said I'll just withdraw mine and they both told me if I made any issue of it it would result in my dog being wrote up! We refused to leave the cast and stayed with them. Next drop old long legged guys dog wallered a track for I'd say a good 35 to 45 minutes till they finally said shoot he's getting near a road (hadn't seen a car all night) and called time out and said we used 15 minutes that drop=SAY WHAT! Next drop same thing except I kept time and he wallered a track for around 45 minutes before they figured out a reason to call time out and judge said we used 25 minutes that drop=not true! last drop was a clean cow pasture and the dog actually got treed twice and judge instantly found the coon on both trees but wouldn't show me! Though they still had hunting time (supposedly) they were pushing deadline at this point and went back to club and yep won first place. I went on to make my dog UKC NT CH and NKC GR NT Ch without ever having him in another fight. The judge and the long legged guy both went on to win a mass of major events that most of us could only ever dream of. One or both might well read this but I don't really care, it's the kind of thing one never really ever forgets or forgives! But again this kind of stuff is rare and if a guy will just stand up and put his foot down and put a question on it wont happen at all.

Shortest hunt, Cut dogs , all three strike, all three tree in under 5 minutes, three dog brawl, three dog scratch. Pleasure hunted the three same dogs the rest of night, no problems.

1st Nite Hunt
Early 80's 3 hour cast, Grand Nite cast. I was hunting a Gr.Nt.Ch named I-79 Bow owned by Emet Brohard. I drew Russ Bellar hunting Ky Rv. Buck, Charlie Shortridge hunting Shortridge's Queen, and Nathan Hammonds hunting Lookout Luke. At the time those 3 were in the top 5 handlers and dogs in the country. I rode with Russ on the cast and was in awe all night. Imagine your first football game ever and your playing in the Rose Bowl. I didn't win but had a ball and managed to learn a few things).

Worse cast.

Autumn Oaks 91 or 92. Grand Nt cast. I was hunting my own dog named Miami Valley Stylish Jinx. I had my first coon treed before the other 3 even got cleaned out. Treed number two alone split while they were on another tree circled. Long story short with 25min left I have +700 and the closes one to me has about 450. We make another tree and hear a dog fight run in and mine is sitting back 10yrds treed a Red dog is under the tree growling and the other two are treed 15yds away on a bush. The non-hunting judge was GOOD friends with the Enlish dog's handler with the 450. He told me I was scratched for fighting and I asked how in the world did he even know which ones were fighting.

Long story short he finally told me I was scratched end of story we found a phone and I called the Master of Hounds and explained situation even after hearing the other cast members say the Red Dog was the only one being aggressive he left me scratched. The judge then said "shutup and I was scratched for not keeping my mouth" That's when I told him our little coonhunt was over and we were bout to go to a whole nuther place. A friend who was along with me and another cast member had to hold me while the non hunting judge and his buddy with the English female went on their merry way. She went on the win Gr Nt that year. And that was the last UKC cast I ever hunted in.

Held at gunpoint

I was hunting a friend of mine Walker male in a hunt over at Beaver Falls Club in PA I believe in the late 80s. We were taken onto some ground to hunt that they supposedly had permission to hunt. Dogs got in deep and treed and we made our way to them to find we had company at the tree. I guess we were on some kind of indian ground that was private and off limits to us. We were held at gun point and I mean 3 rifles pointed our way till the police got there. The guide had some explaining to do and there was some hot moments but we were allowed to gather the dogs up and leave. You just never know what you might come up against.

nite hunt

First nite hunt
I was in a 3 dog cast with my B&T female. I had only been coonhunting for a few months. I knew the rules well but was nervous as can be. The two other guys were a little rusty on them to put it politely. It was a great hunt. Everyone got along great and I got a win. I couldn't of asked for a better group of guys. It made me appreciate all the time a few friends had spent helping me get ready for the hunt.

Worst
3 dog cast. The judge was unsure of every call he made because another guy heckled him after every word he said. The judge and other cast member refused to score a tree of mine. Wouldn't even walk to it. I decided to be an adult and let it go. It happens.

This wasn't my hunt but a friends. Friend drives from Georgia to Iowa to attend American redbone days. Draws a guide that takes them into another state. They stop at a major truck stop along the interstate and guide says to try to get everybody in two trucks and leave other two there. Long story short..... Guide or organization doesn't have permit for this state. Doesn't have permission in the property either. Game warden shows up. Big Issues here. Whole cast, of course, is done. Buddy gets back to his truck and somebody has broke into it and stole everything that could be taken. Then on the way back to Georgia the transmission in his truck decides to burn up. I've had some bad ones, but nothin close to this. Lol 😁

hunting a cast of nt.ch., first turnout my dog gets 1st and 1st by himself with a coon, turn back in to one other dog running, mine gets struck and treed for 75 and gets treed for 125 with another coon, we call time out go to another spot and get another 225+ while the other dogs are in a hole. I got 650+ with a hour to go and not another dog has a plus pt., we go to a standing corn field and everyone is lined up in a separate row, turn the dogs loose and one dog growled, who's it was I have no idea, but you can bet your a$$ they all gonna scratch me cause that's the only way anyone else had a chance. I question it right away, struck my dog and treed it and had another 225+ with around 45 minutes left, had to go back to the club and they scratch me. Ain't been back to that homer of a club!!!

This is a serious question, not intended to rouse any hateful debate;

Do you think you you got homered more back in the "hay day" of the hunts, or current day hunts? Or is it the same?

worst

Around four years ago, I was carrying the card, circled another handlers dog for leafy tree. One handler was mad, thought it should have been minused. He called UKC and complained. I got a call from one of the top UKC people and was told that I didn't know the rules. I was 57 years old at the time and have finished many into NT.CH. and a few into Grand. I have never entered a hunt since and never will. That ruined it for me.

Justin I would say its the same, but it would be a different story of today how I would handle it. I've been around way too long to let worrying me of being barred to care. If I would have been in a that cast I would have withdrawn with my a$$ getting handed to me like that!!! I have mostly had good cast and fun in the hunts but the few bad ones are hard to let go!!!!

I think it was maybe 99 but enter boldens high dollar sackett II in a rqe first hunt for us. Won my cast and qualified him for the world. Regret not taking him but I was young and thought man I ain't got the dog power for something like that. Well to this day he's one of the top 5 coon dogs I've ever hunted with or drawn out with. He ended up getting in a electric fence the following summer and never was the same. Fun hunt though will never forget it. I'd thought I'd won the biggest hunt ever. That's back when I loved it, seems I've lost that spirit.

I know what you are talking about it is hard when they all gang up on a person But anymore I will right up a hole club if I have to just to prove my point that they cheated, now if they cheat some one at there next hunt and they wright them up also, Well I know one of the people at UKC well enough that if a club gets wrote up 2 or 3 times HE will start looking at that club, he is probably one of the most honest people I know, that is what it will take to stop all this BS

He ended up getting in a electric fence the following summer and never was the same. Fun hunt though will never forget it. I'd thought I'd won the biggest hunt ever. That's back when I loved it, seems I've lost that spirit.

I know just what you mean, I had 2 dogs qualified back in in the 90s that was my Maggie female and my Mickey male I regret not taking them I do believe in my mind and heart that the Maggie female would have done real good in all the dogs I have had ( and I have had some good ones) she is the best that I have ever had. a friend of mine told me 3 or 4 times he would pay for everything if I would breed her and give him one pup, never did that , and regret that also, I have a pup right now that has a lot of the blood that she was in her that reminds me so much of Maggie, you know how there is certain thing dogs of the same blood line do if so you know what i'm talking about.

Way more cheating went on back in the "hay day" of the hunts than does today. I would point to the UKC barred list as supportive evidence of this-list is way longer now than in days gone by while there are way fewer hunters. Also back when there were so many hunters, a couple buddies had a descent chance of cheating someone unfamiliar to their area and get away with it, without a bunch of backlash. Today with so few hunters they are pretty much guaranteed to draw the same people several times a year, cheat them and they can bet their turn will come around soon. Also with social media being what it is now, a cheater is going to get exposed and get a bad reputation real quick, which defeats the purpose they cheated to achieve by cheating in the first place.

WORST NITE HUNT I WAS EVER ON WAS A PKC CLUB HUNT. ONLY FOUR DOGS IN HUNT SO ONE CAST. WE ARE ALL FRIENDS AND HUNT TOGETHER ALOT.

POURING RAIN SO THE DOGS WERE HAVING A HARD TIME ALONG THE BANKS OF A LAKE. AFTER AN 30 MINUTES MY DOG CAME IN. I WITHDREW HER AND PUT HER IN TRUCK. ANOTHER DOG CAME IN AND SHE WAS PUT IN TRUCK. NO SIGN OT THE OTHER TWO.

WENT TO A SPOT AND HANDLERS WERE TRACKING. GOT SIGNAL THAT THEY WERE UP ON A RIDGE. OUR GUIDE WHO OWNED ONE OF THE DOGS SAID WE COULD DRIVE UP THERE. WHEN WE GOT TO THE ROAD THE GATE WAS LOCKED. HE SAID WE COULD WALK UP SINCE HE HAD PERMISSION FROM LAND OWNER. WELL THEY STARTED TRACKING DOGS AGAIN THEY HAD MOVED. ONE DOG WAS COMING IN.

A TRUCK WAS COMING DOWN ROAD BEHIND GATE. HE STOPPED OUR GUIDE NEW HIM, ASKED IF HE HAD HEARD THE DOGS. HE SAID YES AND ONE OF THEM IS ON THE TAIL GATE, HE THEN SAID I SHOT HIM!!!! NOW THIS IS WHERE THINGS GOT REAL UGLY!!!! THIS GUY WAS AS CLOSE TO HAVING HIS A$$ WHIPPED BY FOUR GUYS AS YOU CAN GET WITHOUT IT HAPPENING.

HE SAID HE WENT OUTSIDE HIS HOUSE TO RUN THE DOGS OFF AND FEARED FOR HIS LIFE.

THIS GUY WAS COMING DOWN THE ROAD TO GO DUMP THE DOG OFF HIS PROPERTY. DID NOT EXPECT US TO BE THERE.

AFTER SOME SERIOUS ISSUES WE WENT BACK TO GUIDES HOUSE. STATE POLICE IN PA WERE 1/2 HOUR AWAY AND WOULD NOT COME. PA GAME COMMISION SAID IT WAS NOT THERE CASE AND WOULD NOT COME. WHAT A CROCK FROM THESE TWO AGENCYS.

THE NEXT DAY HE CALLED THE DOG WARDENS IN THAT COUNTY OF PA. SHE CAME DOWN TOOK INFO, PICS, CALLED ALL OF US THAT WERE THERE. COPIED HIS PERMISSION SLIP FROM GUY. HAD ALL KINDS OF INFO ABOUT COON HOUNDS AND COMP DOGS. WE WENT TO COURT. OUR GUIDE WON THE TRIAL WAS GIVEN 2000.00 FOR DOG. THE GUY HAD TO GO TO CLASSES. AND LOST HUNTING PRIVLIGES FOR 5 YEARS.

THE DOG LOST WAS A GOOD DOG HAD JUST FINISHED TO NIGHT CHAMPION. NOT SURE IF 2000.00 WOULD HAVE MADE ME HAPPY.

THIS DOG WARDEN DID A GOOD JOB. SHE HAD ADS FROM COONHOUND BLOODLINES WITH STUD DOGS AND WHAT THEY COULD EARN. SHE ALSO SAID THAT IT HELPED AND SPOKE HIGHLY OF US ALL THEY WE DID NOT STOMP HIM. STILL THINK WE SHOULD HAVE!!!!

THAT WAS ALOT OF YEARS AGO, MADE ME SICK AT THE TIME AND HAS MADE ME ANGRY AGAIN TYPING THIS.

SURE HOPE NOBODY EVER HAS TO GO THROUGH THAT.

** NOW INFO FOR YOU ALL. PA LAW SAYS YOU CAN SHOOT A DOG FOR HARRASSING BIG GAME. A WARDEN TOLD US THAT IF YOU DO SHOOT ONE CLAIMING HARRASSING BIG GAME IT HAD BETTER HAVE HAIR IN ITS MOUTH!!! JUDGE DURING THIS TRIAL AGRRED TO THIS STATEMENT AND SAID THAT THERE ARE TWO SETS OF LAWS IN PA FOR DOGS. ONE FOR JUST DOGS, PETS ETC. AND A SET FOR HUNTING DOGS. NOT SURE WHAT ALL THAT MEANS, BUT THAT JUDGE WAS HUNTING DOG FRIENDLY.

MAYBE SOMEONE ON HERE WILL KNOW MORE ON LAWS THAN ME.

That was just mentioned at the PA. Night Hunters banquet/meeting last evening. That is pertaining to PA. state law that states that all dogs must be under control of they're owner. That law does not apply to hunting dogs in the field. It is meant more for house dogs and watch dogs around the house. If those dogs leave the property they need to be on a leash or otherwise controlled by they're owner.
