I have bred my gyp to 16 yr old Semen all the pups was healthy except one female . Since about two weeks old she experienced Eye infections ,Swollen lymph nodes ( were the STRANGLES comes in) , Weight loss (But eating 3xs a day) and a few other symptoms . I have had her to our vet for a total of 5xs since she was 2 weeks old . After several different antibiotics ,steroid's , Eye creams and drops we are back to square one with this pup . Our vet is going to test her blood and do some other tests on her , They have to be sent to Purdue to be tested ,Which could take months for an answer . Just wondering has anyone ever experienced this Disease .

This disease is a silent killer it makes there lymph nodes so enlarged it literally strangles the pup to death . Also causing puppy pyoderma which is abscess's on the face ( Like a bunch of little pimples) . The eyes become Matted shut and holds a green puss inside the eye. It is not contagious to other animals ,And they do not know the cause of this disease , It is similar to Autoimmune deficiency Disease .

How long was the pup on steroids (prednizone) for. I have dealt with this 2 times and always had good success at clearing it up in 2 to 3 weeks. How long was the pup on antibiotics. Have you taken the time to put hot compresses on the muzzle area to help remove the crust on the sores and put antibacterial creme on it to keep it from cracking and getting worse. It's not real normal for a 2 week old pup to get strangles. Most cases I have seen are 4 to 5 weeks and older. Last case I dealt with,pup was on prednizone for 2 weeks before lowering the dose and was extended for another week before things got under control. Did the vet give the pup meds other than prednizone? It tough to see any pup go thru this stuff. Hard to take for myself when treating one! Good luck with it,Danny G.

Strangles is an autoimmune disorder. Been through it twice. Once about 20 years ago. Pretty fuzzy about the exact treatment but the pup recovered with no lasting damage and no health issues later. The most recent was a year or so ago. Took the pup to the vet and told him it was puppy strangles. He knew of the strangles but could not recall ever seeing it firsthand. The pup was given Prednisone on a decreasing dose for I believe a little over 2 weeks. Antibiotic was also given for secondary infection. I was lucky to get to the vet at the first signs of trouble and the pup healed up rather quickly. The only side effect was temporary weight gain from the Prednisone. I might add the vet I used is more than competent. Evidently, this is somewhat rare. If your pup does have strangles, I am somewhat confused why Purdue needs to be involved. But I am sure not a vet. Danny the pup has been on prednisone and antibiotics since she was 2 wks old she was actually off the steroids with decreased doses. But still had some eye infection issues . The vet put her on an antibiotic salve and it never help. The vet is stumped. I have used this vet for about 12 yrs he knows what he is doing . When off the steroids she was finally given her vaccinations and was doing great. Then Bam! it started again, Swelling of the lymph nodes ,Eyes getting worse holding puss to the point her eyes would swell. It sucks to see her go through this , She is at times up and doing great because of the steroids , Then she is laying around nose is running and eyes mat shut . We are doing everything we can to make her more comfortable ,Hot Compresses for her eyes and nose , We put her in the shower 2x's a day to loosen everything up and get all the crusty stuff off of her.

J Gearing Purdue is going to do more tests on the discharge that her body is producing , And do some blood work. I want to know for sure what the cause is or why we are not getting anywhere with this pup. We have done everything , the vet and I are stumped on why her body is not correcting itself. All we can do is keep doing what we are doing and hope she pulls through.

One of the things that seems to set it off is the vaccinations.If you google puppy strangles or juvenile pyoderma. you will find this is a common factor.
Wonder if that is not what happened when to your pup regressed .
For the most part most pups recover quickly and if treated as soon as the onset of symptoms you will never know the pup had it.
I had a few come down with it within days of their first vaccination.I recognized what it was immediately and began treating them .Never would have known they had it.No long lasting effects ,no scarring because it never got that bad.
Don't have a link to it but I recall when I researched strangles on line,I recall reading of a couple extra tough cases that kept recurring .They had to increase the prednisone dosage .

Well she is still trying to pull through . She has been off the steroids for a few weeks now , And she just finished up her 4th antibiotic. She is acting a lot better ,wanting to be a pup again instead of just laying there. She is still matting up a lil in her eyes , But for the most part she is about over it I think. Lets keep our fingers crossed , That it doesn't start all over again since she is done with her antibiotics.
