Put the Honor Back Into the Title of GRNCH
I got back into hunting after a 20 year run in the military over ten years ago. I started hearing from the Old School Hunters I grew up with the common Grand Night of today could not hold a candle to the Grand Night of yester year. After hunting with a lot of the current Grand Nights I started to understood what they meant and did not like what I was seeing.
Why has the quality of Grand Night hounds declined over the years? The old wise men would say that it is because they hunted against 60 dogs or more in local hunts every night compared to 15 to 20 hounds you would find today.
In my opinion, along with others, the honor of the title of Grand Night has been degraded. It's been said that "hunting with so few hounds at a clubhouse has produced them, (Grand Nights), in great numbers and in record times. (If UKC would produce a percentage report of Grand Nights produced from all dogs hunted in the 70's compared to the current numbers of today, I would be interested in seeing the results.)
"Another has been finished to Grand Night!" and the back slapping, high fives and reach-a-rounds are given. All too common today and too easy to achieve at the local club level with the same 15 to 20 dogs showing up.
The dogs that get our attention today are owned and handled by the ones that have the burning desire, can afford, and put them on the road to campaigning at all the big hunts. Multiple "big wins" gets everyone's attention today via the internet. What I'm getting at is, there are Grand Night dogs everywhere in our local clubs, most are not discovered, or rise to the top, because they are not hunted or campaigned in the big hunts thru out the year. They get lost with all the other local Grand Nights that are FINISHED OUT.
So... with that said... I agree, a new title is required for the local competition level for Grand Night coon hounds.
Grand Nights are a dime a dozen and hold the same respect today as a Night Champion and some less in my opinion. Think about how many Grand Nights you have hunted with regularly and thought, "this dog is a hunts like a turd with the worst".... but then you have another Grand Night dog you hunt with regularly and think.... "this is an amazing coon hound".
All Grand Nights today need a new grading level to separate the ones that are hunting like retards and the ones hunting like possible World Champions.
There needs to be a new title for the CONSISTENT, Grand Night Champion coon hounds, hunting today at the club level.
I've always liked Wonder Dog myself. "Have no fear... Wonder Dog is here!"
