Hide Prices in Indiana

I don't coon hunt to make money off of hides at all, but what are the prices of coons going for? I had a fur buyer who was only going to give me $2.00 a hide.

indiana coon prices

I had a buddy sell 15 and averaged 3.90 a coon overall. I've heard of even lower prices than that.

I would rather leave them laying in the woods than to sell them for that price......!!!

They are much more valuable if left in the tree, at least for me. Hard to put a price on having woods where you can put a young dog and know that most of the time you are going to hit a good track, even on bad nights.

Visiting the in laws this weekend and was chatting with a cousin who had told me he and a buddy started coon hunting. He proceeded to tell me that they had killed 27 one night (wether they did or not, who knows?). He was pretty proud and included they sold them and got around $4 a hide ($108). I think I surprised him when I told him it would take me 3 years to kill that many.

To each his own on killing coons (and I am not opposed to people killing them), but it seems like I would have to kill a whole lot of coon to even get close to what I can get for a good young dog that trees its own coon. Let's say low end being $1000 depending on ability, breeding, and chrome perhaps all the way up to $10k or more. Heck, @$5 a coon, it would take 200 coon to make a $1k and 2000 hides to make $10k.

indiana coon prices

I only shoot them out for pups or every now and again to an older dog. Heck the .22 bullet is worth more than the coon. It's better to leave em.
