coon prices

My brother lives in Western NY and he said his average was 19$ on 35 coon. But that was cleaned and fleshed out. He said the extra work to put them up paid off.
He traps and said his fox this year are the best hides he has seen in years and the yotes are great too. Said he has about 75 of each.

That might be a recent auction price in NY City for the biggest finished prime hides I'm surprised! The buyers don't even want to buy coon around here right now! Last check they were offering 5 to 8 dollars for prime XXX.

Doug i just went to the Local Fur Buyer here last night and he said the most he is paying is $12 and that is for good colored XXXL that is fleshed and stretched. if it is in the round or green you can knock it down to about 5 for that same coon. i have only killed 4 so far this year and not sure if i will knock another out or not haha.

$1 for a big coon in Arkansas. That's what our fur buyer told us. Not worth the trouble in my book. Keep the coons thick, and we'll have some fun at the hunts!

Doug, far from NYC. These small auctions are the ticket right now. Around 15 buyers pushing coon up. The nice late coon. Speculate and miss out. Alot of us did not!

NY Auction

I read about one of the fur auctions in NY (I forget the name of it) over on trapperman.com and what I read was disappointing. I don't remember seeing any high prices posted for coon.

There was a large fur auction in MI last weekend and the average price on coon was $6.91 with a high of $16.50.

Central Maine Fur Auction last weekend coon averaged $7. The high price paid was not posted.

Were these $15 to $20 coon a high price paid on a select few very nice pelts or the average? There is a huge difference. Who cares if the buyer paid a high of $15, the average is what counts. I am willing to bet $15 to $20 wasn't the average paid. If it was let me know who the buyers were at that auction as I have some fur to haul to them. BTW if they are paying a $15 to $20 average on coon this year I doubt they will be around to buy next year.

Overall the fur market is pretty tough this year. Fox are off from last year, the muskrat market is coming down, mink are a disappointment, and the coon market is terrible. One of the few bright spots is select western heavy coyotes. They are sought by the trim trade and are doing well. We are talking coyotes coming out of Montana, Wyoming, the western Dakota's, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. The eastern coyotes aren't nearly as good and are selling cheaper.

Don't get me wrong guys I hope the market turns around. I for one like to make a little money back off my trapping and coon hunting. Not looking to get rich but it is nice to make a little money back to pay for dog food, gas, traps, etc.

Commodities market. It isn't 100% by a long shot, but if gas prices are low it usually seems like other commodities such as fur goes low.

I wish that were the truth but the lower prices has done very little to slow these guys around here.

Some people simply enjoy killing coon with a.....dog, spotlight, or trap. Lol. I just enjoy seeing good dog work and knock one out once in a while as payment for a job well done. The more coon, the easier to train pups. Jmo

If everyone would stop carrying them in and selling for low $ in a year or 2 price will go up. Supply and demand. ..

Most the guys around here are not taking many. Some of the guys are tanning hides. I don't know of anybody I have talked to killing many with the low prices.

Will, I love your logic!! I personally have knocked out about 10 this year and cant think of a night that I ran into another hunter and I hope it stays that way!!!!!!! coon worth 1.50 every year would be perfectly fine with me!! Have not sold a single hide and don't plan to

We certainly don't have a shortage of coon and I know you and I have killed a few over the years and the next year the numbers are the same so we know its a healthy balance. I just worry about disease but I guess the Fisher Cat that has moved into the area recently and the highways may just take up the slack. We generally take between 60 and 90 a yr but I think we have bout 30 in freezer this yr I like to knock some down for the young dogs so it all works out. Portions of the South have a low population so I understand where everybody is coming from. I was taught to skin everything I shot. I heard one local Bluetick man in my area is shooting them and leaving in the woods. Free meals for a coyote population explosion!
