Breeding "old" females?

How old is too old in your opinion? How old have you seen females bred/whelp successfully?

I think condition is far more important, than the number, but I am sure there are a few out there who know a little more about reproductive health than I. Most Vets push spay/neuter, and even most breeders it seem to believe breeding anything over the age of 6 is **** near as bad as murder.

As long as the female is in good health she should be ok. I just raised a litter this Summer off of a 9 year old female.

I raised a litter off of a 10 year old female. She was healthy and in good shape, whelped 6 and raised five. I kept one and have never regretted the decision.

Makes me feel a little better. My bitch will be turning 8 in November. She's been hunted hard, in top shape and taken care of well her whole life (ie, shots, wormer, heartworm, expensive food, dentals, routine bloodwork, taken to a Vet and not home treated for anything wrong with her)

I have had it mentioned to me that they may have pups, and a decent litter, with no issues, but the pups quality genetically speaking will be lesser from an old female than when she was young. Anyone find this true? I''ve heard that said about old males as well, and never found much truth in that. I know its true in human women.

I've heard the same thing but have never seen any drop off in the quality/ability in the pups off of older females.

Too old?

well if the female is in good health, you will never know unless you try it!
as to older females producing poorer quality pups-- I seen it both ways! first time I remember ol Rose was bred 3 times to the same male--- 1st cross was pretty dang good-- second cross about 50/50 3rd cross 3 years later were all most all duds.. BUT she was later bred twice to Walnut Valley Butch.( in her older age.). the first litter was only 2 pups and they were real cooners. the 2nd time only 4 pups - all 4 made good hounds
with the exception of one having a sorry voice--

but here again she was bred to an older dog the 1st 3 times
the last 2 were fron a male thst was just past 2 and only a year apart.

Bottom line-- you will never know unless you try!
Good luck

.

Like HOBO i just bred a female that was over 8 years old and it was her first litter. She had 10 pups and two passed the first day and she raised eight. They are now 5 months old and doing good.

She stayed healthy looking during pregnancy , came off the pups and still looks great. I hunted her in a hunt two weeks before the pups were born and had her back i the woods as soon as they were weaned. I am not hunting her much now as I am working a younger one but she wants to go every night.
