how old is your dog some never get out of it takes alot of patinets and time ive had 2 like that i just went out with treats and never force them to let me get hold of them within 2 wks they would come to me like i was thier best freind could be somebody has really abused the dog bad hope you the best with your dog

I have never seen or heard of anyone {that was honest about it} ever being able to get a shy dog "unshy." There are always people that will tell you how to "fix" or cure this problem...almost as many people see bigfoot. I know this is not what you want to hear, but unfortunately it is the truth.
I would suggest you take this dog back where you got it and don't waste any time on it. At the very least I would call the breeder and let him know what is going on. Otherwise he will say "you did it" and then you are stuck.
The cold hard fact of the matter is that life is just too short to spend it trying to repair a defective dog...it's hard enough to make something out of one that don't have a severe setback right off the bat, why put yourself in this position???

i hate tell you that my post is very true ive had dogs for over 50 yrs and have seen alot of things that work and some not work theres alot of shy dogs that can be fixed if your smart enough to figure out what it takes but i will say there are some that can't be fixed not being smart or trying to start a bickering match

I have one that I've had for 3 years and unfortunately she has never came out of it. She doesn't act skittish at all in the woods and is a pleasure to hunt. She's just not gonna let strangers get near her. I helped finish her out when she was younger so I knew when I got her how she was.

Shy dog
Try rubbing on the dog, and talk to it, in a gentle manner, takes a lot of time, working with the dog, if i can get them were, i can catch them, i don't mind it if nobody else can.
the dog i got now was shy of people real bad when i got her,i thought she might have been beat and found out later she had been.my wife loves dogs so i would bring that shy dog in the house and give her treats and i would sit in the floor and talk to her and pet her alot. shes fine now but i doubt if anybody but me could catch her in the woods which is good cause aint nobody got any business catching her anyhow.

There is a difference between a dog that was born shy and one that has been made shy. I should have clarified this in my last post...endless apologies. If a dog has been made shy they might have the capacity to get over it with the right owner. If that is the case then I would probably spend a little time with it and see if the dog acts any better. I still would not use up too much time...some still never do. But the cold hard fact is that a dog born shy, one that acts that way for no reason, will never get over it. They were born that way and they will die that way. Life is too short to waste it on a dog that wont straighten up and fly right. Ever wonder why the same bunch of guys always have above average dogs??? It's because of a lot of things, but the main one is that they are not trying to be a crusader and make something out of dogs that just don't have it.
Let me say it another way...which would you rather have to worry about?? Is my young dog gonna throw two or three locates before he breaks over into a steady chop on the tree???...or...is my dog gonna pee down both legs and run back in his dog house when I get home today and walk out to the kennel ???

He's 20 months old acts like someone beat him gets jittery with sudden movements I've been working with him walking him on long lead both in the day and night seems to be warming up to me trying to get whoever I can to socialize the dog to know he's safe around here just nervous to let him loose agian took me 3 hours to catch him the other night I wanna give him a chance he put up 4 coon in 4 trees in the first woods but thinks he's in trouble right now when walked up upon and takes off...

take some hot dogs or good treats with you every time you catch him pet him up good and give him a treat the 1 beagle gyp i had was plum scared to death when i went pick her up guy had to go in the pen and drag her out the male dog wasn't quite as bad i would go out feed them they would stay in the box till i was away from the pen area i started takeing them treats out when i went outside id say treat treat at 1st i had to lay them on the floor and walk away after a few days they would take them outa my hand run in the box to eat them within 2 weeks i could holler treat treat they would be at the gate wantin them treats and you woulda never knew they were ever that bad but they was like a 1 man dog nobody else could get close to catch them hope ya get him fixed sounds like he will make a good dog

It sounds more like you have a dog that is not adjusting well. This is way different from a shy dog. What did this dog do when you went into any or all of the 4 trees it treed the coons in??? Did it leave the tree and run from you or were you able to walk in and put a leash on the dog??
You might want to try and get some honest history on this dog...it is sounding more like one I saw once that was very severely "broke" off of running deer. What we thought was the dog acting funny around people turned out to be the dog scared to death it was going to be put in a place where it might run into a deer. It eventually got over it but for a long time, like several months the dog would blow a gasket and lose it if it got near a deer in the woods.
All that said, it is really ultimately up to you just how much of this you are willing to tolerate, whatever the reason. You can hang any name on what this dog is doing or what the cause was but the bottom line is always that it is taking up a lot of time for something other than what it was bought and gets fed for. if he was born shy i doubt if theres anyway of helping him,but if somebody miss treated him you might get him over that.if he treed 4 coons the first night then hes bred to be a coon dog.i would try to become best friends with that dog and make him think you walk on water and if you see him getting better i would start hunting him. i know its a pain about him not comming to you but the only way he will know its ok to tree coons is by hunting him.have you though about takeing another dog that will tree and just leading him until the shy dog trees then turn the other dog loose so he can tree with him.i wouldnt make alot of racket when i got close to the tree just take my timeand if the shy dog leaves i would go to petting and praising the dog treeing when i got there that way the shy dog will hear see its ok and maybe come back on the tree.ive done this before and it worked but i dont know if it will help your dog but it might be worth trying.the main thing is the dogs got to trust you if he dont he might not ever get any better.good luck with him and i hope he comes around for you.
I seen several shy dogs in my life and very, very few that is BORN that way will come out of it. You can feel sorry for the dog but most time you are wasting your time. Just when you think you are getting somewhere they show a little of that shyness you get aggravated and yell they pee all over themselves and well back to square one. NO shy dogs for me please!
I would try getting him to eat a can of sardines out of your hands. I would try this several days in a row and pet on him each time, if he doesn't come around in a week I would give him lead poisoning and start over with a new dog. I haven't seen many skittish dogs turn it around though. Good luck though!

If I were to take your advise I wouldn't have a dog that wins all over the country!! Look some people just can't train dogs/pups. Same goes with shy dogs. Bottom line is you can get a shy dog either born that way or man made nite hunt ready. I have done both. Best time I have EVER spent on dogs. While there always going to be a little touchy I NEVER have to worry about them leaving the tree in a nite hunt because of a stranger. Now at the tailgate of the truck is a differnt story. Its not an overnite process it takes alot of time but its well worth it. If you need help send me a PM

Best dog I ever owned was very people shy when i got her she didnt want to be touched at all I did was feed her out of my hands every night and petted her a little took a long time and she is still a little jumpy at times but she loves attention now from people she knows if its a stranger she is still unsure about them at first but she turned out to be an excellent dog.

treat him like any other dog. just because he is shy doesn't mean you can get some control on him like any other dog so you can "catch" him. the dog could be broke to come to you. may not call some outta the woods but if you go in there or at the truck they will let you put your hand on them. even if he crawls on his belly to do it. seen a lot of them hard headed beagles fold right up when you wanted to catch them and yelled down shy or not.. never too bad on the coon dogs cause if they would tree you leash em up there. but aint nothing more frustrating than a dog that wont let ya catch em. a shy dog is one of the biggest headaches if you are dead set on keeping them. most people break and want to kill the dog and the dog can sense it.
treat them like any other dog because with shy dogs the more you baby talk and pamper them the longer they will act shy for the attention. most people do not have the patience to ever bring them around.
