Two weeks ago we were running three beagles for rabbit training in central Massachusetts. One beagle went missing, we figured someone grabbed it and kept it. This morning we ran four beagles in the same block of woods and one beagle went missing and another was found by a local resident who called the police who then called us and the dog was found bloody, muddy, had a grapefruit size mass near it's rear ribs, puncture wounds around neck, slash cut marks around face and nose. He is now over night at the local vet hospital.

We have bobcats, we've had bobcats for years...we've run beagles in this block of woods multiple times. Thinking possible mountain lion. Just wondering anyone's thoughts.

Mass fish and wildlife claim there are no recorded mountain lions in Massachusetts or "no recorded breeding pair" but I know local sportsmen who have claimed to have seen a lion run across roads etc.

Wondering what could possibly be happening in this block of woods that has taken two dogs & severely Injured one within weeks of each other.

Looking for some feedback from any lion hunters out west who are familiar with the characteristics of lions or if it is a bobcat or maybe something else.

Massachusetts is a very liberal state where hunting is very restricted and they won't admit to any mountain lions being present.

We live in a farm town where there's a lot of land, ledges, powerlines, cliffs, beaver swamps. Let me know anyone's thoughts.

You say coyotes but we were with the pack of beagles. Beagles run circles and run the rabbit to us for us to shoot. If it was coyotes we would of heard them yipping or fighting. Right?

coyotes would be my guess as well
a coyote that is looking to make a meal of your beagle will be silent.you have a better chance of running in to a bear before you would a mountain lion in your state.

Followed the garmin tracking gps from the lead dog through the block of woods today. Only found bobcat tracks where the beagle tracks were and it was along an entire beaver swamp/creek bed. Assuming beagles ended up running a bobcat and the cat decided to fight back and **** happened. Still can't find ruby who's missing since yesterday morning and drummer who's been missing since two weeks ago. Pepper still in hospital...the puncture wounds around his neck are pretty bad and vet thinks skin might die, night need surgery to remove some of it. Internal bleeding seems to be clearing up though. Taking it by day now...

My friend has a branco breed dog that in the one area he hunts will bring coyotes in when he is running, but he always here them coming in or howling. They have been within 20 yards of him circling him and the dogs. He never had any taken or hurt but has been close to it. But its just the one dog that will draw them in the other hounds don't seem to have the same effect. Just what I've seen hope you find out and let us know.

Have had coyotes come in on my beagles several times they were silent.Had one trailing where the dogs had been while i was going back to the truck.When they have their pups is the worst time.Some dogs voices seem to attract them more than others.

Have had them attack my coonhounds before. New England coyotes are usually larger than out west, I know of a beagle that was killed in twin mtn last year.
