New clubs

I have done some research however would like to hear first hand how bad is it to start a new club?
Any input and suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm about 15 min west of staunton. I've looked into some of the formal procedure to starting a club, not sure I could slap it all together but i would have a few possible meeting places and turnouts in mind.

From what I have read it does not seem to bad. Main thing is on you. You have to find good people that will help out at events and you can depend on. I think I pretty much got that covered might need to recruit a few more. So I was just checking to see if anyone had recently went through it.

You need to fill out a new club application, send it in with a list of members and your club officers, If there is a few clubs already around your area you may be denied ukc hunts. we have 2 clubs in surrounding counties that are close and we were denied here in Stanton,ky

Along with a list of club members and officers you will need bylaws to send to UKC and I may be wrong but they might want location of club and a description of club house not sure though. PKC is about the same but I know they are a little bit easyer. Hope this helps. How for are you from NC are Danville VA?

Easy to start one. Not easy to get folks to show up to help do anything. Matter of fact its dern near impossible. Plan on having 2 or 3 that are willing to help out with things like cutting grass, building maintenance and so on.

ga dawg is right, and with grocery prices you can pretty well forget making money in your kitchen, your turn outs for the events wont be that high, heck a blue tick sectional near me a few weeks ago had like 11 dogs for the hunt!!!

Just went through it a year & a half ago, started out like a ball of fire now there is about 4 of us doing everything, scheduling events, guiding, judging, grocery shopping for the kitchen, cooking, working the kitchen, can't get a master of hounds most of the time so we use the hunt director format, taking entry fees, hauling all the benches & other supplies to & from the club, putting up all the signs before the hunt, taking them all down after the hunt, making all the calls trying to get good deals on things to raffle off for the club or donations, sending in all the paper work to UKC after each event, taking money to bank to deposit cause after all this work & effort that the 3 or 4 people do to put on a hunt you actually profit $100-$150 for the club, but other than that yea it's easy... Good luck

GA dog & chall 123

It's like a deer hunting camp, no one wants to help cut grass, weed eat, gather fire wood, clear trails, hang posted signs, & make sure everything is ok on the inside of the camp itself but they all show up with ther kids, step sons, nephews, nieces, grand kids, & brother inlaws for the first day of season! Lol

I HELPED GET OUR CLUB STARTED WHEN I WAS YOUNGER. MY FATHER WAS THE PRES. AT THAT TIME. WE HAD ALOT OF GOOD CLUB MEMEBERS.

THAT IS ONE OF THE MAIN THINGS!!!! YOUR CLUB WILL ONLY BE AS GOOD AS YOUR MEMBERS. YOU WILL ONLY HAVE A HANDFUL YOU CAN COUNT ON. DO NOT TRY TO DO TO MUCH ALL AT ONE TIME. THEY WILL BURN OUT.

I KNOW CLUBS THAT TRY TO DO TO MUCH ALL AT ONCE. UKC, PKC, HOLD HUNTS EVERY MONTH GUYS WILL BURN OUT. HOLD A FEW SEE HOW IT GOES. SPREAD THEM OUT. HAVE CLUB HUNTS.

OUR CLUB WE WERE IN THE PROCESS OF BUILDING THE CLUB HOUSE AND WE OWN 40 ACRES. SO EVENTS REALLY ADDED TO THE WORK.

GOODLUCK.

Thanks for all the replies. I am kind of expecting that the ones with me starting it up will be the workers. As I told many of them if they want to complain about the current clubs then here is an opportunity to not become what they say the other clubs are.

Rob,
We have a guy that has the land so hoping to work it out with him that the club can stay at least the clubhouse and parking area.

Southern,
I am about 45 minutes from NC down 22. About an hour from Greensboro. about an hour to Danville,Va.

I have not been able to find a rule that states clubs have to be a certain distance from each other. I know that they do not want events on the same day with clubs within 100 miles of each other. I emailed UKC however have never gotten a response.
There are clubs that will only do hunts and not even think about bench shows or field trials and do not have the setup for water races. I am trying to get all o that going.

There is no set rule on how close / far clubs have to be to each other before we approve or not approve. We look at that on a case by case basis and it kind of depends on the area. You have to remember the reason that we sometimes don't approve clubs for being to close is because we simply cannot find clubs event dates when there are too many clubs in an area. That and it waters down the participation as others have mentioned above. Fewer, stronger clubs are definitely the ideal.

Todd

Thanks for the reply. I totally understand the clubs need a good following to be successful. And the more clubs you have the less people that are going to go to any of them. I hunt at both clubs close to me from time to time and they have some good people there. They are also locked in to what the "club" does by other members.
Just trying to find options on what we can do, we are not trying to run any club off but hoping to draw more people in the area.

That's a good point Michael. On one hand you have to guard against trouble makers wanting to split off and form a new club because they don't like being held to the standards of a good club. On the other hand, you have old clubs who are not willing to try new things which frustrates energetic new members so they decide to split off and start a progressive new club. Danged if you do and danged if you don't. lol

Well sent paperwork in last week so hopefully will find out something soon. Not planning on getting any events this year but would be nice to do some HTX hunts. Also plan on doing some meat hunts and even have a hunt off throughout the year for the members. Kind of holding tight to see what happens.
