So, for quite some time I’ve been talking to several others about getting a new dog. Something that serves many purposes…

- I want to keep my 6 year old son engaged, so I need something that handles well, and won’t scare him off. And it needs to be a younger dog, to be my boy's dog for years to come.

- I enjoy hunting year around, so it needs to be a pleasure to hunt, and needs to be fairly accurate. So it’s got to be ready year-around, when I want/need it. I have to be able to count on it.

- I like hunting with others so it can’t be mean in anyway, especially around kids. So it’s got to be sociable and get along with others.

- I also like to go to a competition hunt from time to time, so it needs to be fairly quick on strike and tree. It has to be a utility dog.

- I don’t always have a lot of time to hunt during the week, due to work and other commitments, so it must be low maintenance and ready to hunt, when I am.

But here’s the problem, I don’t know that I have the makings of this in my kennel, so I’m not sure I could breed/raise this pup myself. And given my limited availability, I’m not sure I could train it, if I did have the pup. But of course, if this dog exists, it’s either not for sale, or someone wants a fortune for them.

Am I being too lazy and need to suck it up? Or recognize that others are better suited for the patience and knowledge of raising and training a dog, and pony up the $$$s?

Or… do I just settle with whatever I can find and make the most of it, for as long as I have time to???

I don't think you are being lazy, but the kind of dog you are describing is a rare thing. Lots of dogs may have most of what you are looking for, but few have all. Your son is at the age that he may or may not like coonhunting for the long haul. What you need now IMO is an older dog that you can go out with your son and tree coons with. A dog that if 2 weeks goes by and it doesn't get out, its ok with that. Kids that age a lot of times have a lot going on. School, sports and other activities get in the way of coonhunting..which is how it should be really.

If you do that for a couple years and your son really gets the bug then save for a younger more competitive dog thats will take more hunting and more maintenance to be successful.

the dog your looking for will be like finding a needle in a haystack. young dogs need lots of attention. i would suggest finding a older dog. they dont require so much hunting. plus a young dog like you just described is gonna set you back $$$$$$ were a older dog would be alot cheaper. when i take my step daughter with me i try to take the dog that dont blow out the country. the one that hunts and trees coons and has a good handle. hope you find what your looking for. If you had 10grand to spend and a new truck to wear out searching, the odds would still be against you finding the dog you describe.

ur not lazy or asking to much. but i do agree with other fellows that an older dog would be easier to find.
my advice would be dont rush into buying the wrong dog but be ready and quick if the right dog comes available.

A young dog as described (2-5) would be pretty hard to find, and take a lot of $$$$ to buy them. On the other hand an older dog (5-8) seems more realistic. We all know good dogs are hard to find and aren't cheap, but I think you should be able to find one that suits you and your son and not BREAK THE BANK!! Best of Luck!!

heck if I was in your shoes I would start researching the leopard dogs . easy maint. handle like a yard dog and hunt like a hound . it's worth a shot .

They are out there i have sold a couple in the last few years, it takes alot of time to develop a young dog into what you described! They all dont make everything you described but when they do they fetch 4-10k depending on ability! I really like the one i have now i have been hunting her pretty regular for a year now and she just turned two!!

Ok, I’ll come clean… I wasn’t really talking about a dog. It was just an analogy, because I thought everyone could relate to looking for a dog. For several months now, I’ve been talking to folks about the National Hound and Tree Dog Association, with only limited response.

What I’m really looking for, is not a dog, but a way to promote and protect the sport we all love. But like a dog, our sport means something different to a lot of different people. Some people have youngsters and want to protect the sport for their kid’s future. Some folks live for the competition events, others just like to pleasure hunt. Some hunt year around, and others only focus on the season when they can harvest game. So… creating the perfect organization to serve everyone’s needs, will be somewhat like looking for that unicorn some of you have described. And that is likely why we have so many different, smaller organizations, today. But, that’s not to say that one organization could not work and collaborate with the various organizations to do their best to serve most everyone’s needs.

But also like a dog, you either have to have the time, patience and talent to develop the organization or you pony up some funds to pay someone else that has abilities to get the job done. Like anything worth having, it takes some money, it takes time and it takes maintenance to have and keep that something special. AND I knew if I got on here and asked for some advice I would get a bunch of great, thoughtful responses, because the hound community is full of some great people that love to offer a helping hand! So I’m sorry for misleading you, but I ask you to please give some thought to this analogy…

Some of us pony up those thousands of dollars to own that something special, others devote those countless hours to developing that something special, but either way it’s a huge investment… isn’t it worth a small investment to help protect it?

I had thoughts about a coon hunting podcast, it would be a lower cost and affordable way to deliver something that would both be entertaining, a way to gather people, but more importantly the opportunity to educate the common hunter about the many threats that are out there to our sports. I personally believe most people care just aren't very aware or educated on the dangers that are out there. Keep up the good work dave! I would be more then happy to help in anyway that I could.

I have wat ur looking for she is 21/2 she ben running and treeing from four month old but she's nt cheap 3500 ill show her anyway u want she gets by herself and when she trees she dnt care if there is a dog treed ten feet from her she won't leve it an she won't leve track if she starts it she dnt care
