Need your assistance please
Need help from y'all, if you are able.
Last November, our American Black and Tan was shot while running around our car next to our home. We live far out in an extremely rural area of TN. and chose to do so in order to be able to have animals that would be free to run the property.
Around Easter of 2013, this skinny B & T wandered up, and my fiancé fell in love immediately. We made attempt to find the owner but after about 7 or 8 weeks, nobody claimed him. So, we took him to be vetted, and checked for a chip. No chip, so we had one put in. All went well, and "Hambone" gained weight, and really started to look fine. He fattened up, and got shiny as can be. We began to get inquiries for stud service. However, we wanted to have a DNA done first to determine his pedigree for sure.
We had a neighbor that hates all dogs, and came over to complain that Hambone was keeping him awake with his baying. He told my fiancé that he as "going to kill our dog"., and not only was he going to kill our dog, but if we didn't like I, then he would kill us too. 3 days layer, he made good on the first half of his threat and shot Hambone.
We rushed Hambone to the vet in an attempt to save him, That wasn't an option, because the bullet severed his spinal cord, and rendered him unable to walk. So, we had Hambone put down. While we were at the vet, the shooter called the cops and told them he shot our dog, along with a myriad of excuses.
This came up before the grand jury, and they returned a true bill on 3 counts. Reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, cruelty to animals, and intentional killing of an animal. What the District Attorney Generals office want to know is this. How much expense was incurred on Hambone, and how much was the dog worth ? Since he was a stray, I don't know what he was worth, but to buy a puppy was over $1000. Hambone was a good hunter and would tree coons every time out. They are wanting us to get an estimate as to Hambone's value. He was estimated to be 3 years old by our vet.
Can anyone help me here ?
Thank you,
Carolyn
