as someone who has done his share of ridin I can tell ya it took a horse made of steel to take a hit like that and still run as good as he did. most would have been done at the gate.
also I kinda agree with his owner, though the rant was a little out of place. too many owners and trainers opt out of the Preakness if they don't win the derby then come in to run the Belmont as a spoiler.
when secretariat won the triple crown Sham was there in all 3 races, pushing the limits but running with him all the way through. had he beaten secretariat in the Belmont, it would have been because one horse had more endurance than the other. Not because he took a vacation during the Preakness and came in rested and geared to spoil.
while I was a bigger fan of several other pedigrees who ran this years races.......IMO Crome was still the super horse this year.
