cover dogs

Give me your opinion on what you think one is...

My thoughts are a dog that leaves his track,a track ,what ever, and covers a lot of ground to get to a tree... And does it most of the time.

I think a cover dog is one that backs another dog on a tree when they are fairly close to each other. I'm not sure I want a dog to drop a track that he is working deep and come into the tree. ...I've seen dogs working the same track close to each other and if a dog trees first they go on and find another track. That's not a cover dog..

I think of a cover dog as a dog that doesn't do anything until another dog barks then it runs to them and covers

I have one liked Billy described if anyone wants to hunt with one or wants to own one

IMO cover dog = poor track dog,he can't smell the same coon the other dogs are running. Or the lead dog has a colder nose, anyway with so much emphasis on the tree, would it be safe to say better track dogs would lead to less covering?

I've seen dogs that would cover everything in the woods when hunted with other dogs, but didn't have any problem treeing coons when hunted alone. So I don't think it has anything to do with a lack of nose or track speed. I think it is more that they hear a dog bark and they just have to go see what is going on that is so exciting over there. It appears to more of a lack of focus than anything else IMO.

A cover dog just has a queer streak .... if you have a coondog it don't make for any problems .. just less walking to your buddies dog and you can keep asking him if he heard your dog tree first.

The ones that aggravate me are the ones the smother your dog ... bark on his trail , pester him and when your dog tries to locate or even looks up a legit tree .. the smother dog showers down ... them kind are way worse than just a cover dog and can flat kick your tail ...

I agree with your discription on a covering dog. these are the type that make my blood pressure go up and don't last long at my place! Some people might like them this way,but I can't stand it. JMO.
