Redbone Kids

Would love to see pics of kids and their redbones. I got a baby girl almost 7 months old who loves dogs just smiles when they come around her. I cant wait to take he out with me. Tried to get my wife to let me use one of those carriers with the back pack straps and she said no haha. She isnt from a hunting family and is a little worried how early im going to try and take her with me.

So post some pics with kids and their redbones and at what age did you start taking them? I asked my dad when I started and he said once I was old enough to keep up which he thought 3 or 4yrs old.

My boy and his pup Otis. Won't be long and he'll be going hunting with me. He wants to now, but I think he may need a couple more years to make the long walks through some of our terrain.

Kids and Redbones were made for each other! Their great attitude towards people is one of the biggest reasons they are my breed of choice.
They start out like this

end up like this

Allen Washburn with Arkansas Little Girl Caitland Washburn with Hacksaw Jack

Allen on the Left My son Greg Owens on the right

we started taking all these kids as soon as they wanted to go. They are the real reason I fool with dogs.. I believe all kids need a coondog

Good times

Della started hunting with me at age 9 or 10. She is now 15 and would hunt every night if possible. Her older sister Sammy hunted with me "until" she was about 11. I learned you can take them too much, when they are too young and burn them out. Saw this happen many times with friends too.
Things to keep it fun and keep them going.
Get them what they need: Frog legs on good boots that fit, briar proof coat and most important a light weight good quality light. Take hot chocolate and snacks along at least the first few times. Take them on good nights when the weather is decent (at least the first 10 nights). Just make 1 or 2 drops then go back home ( keep them wanting to go). MOST IMPORTANT: When you are way back in the country on those dirt roads, LET THEM DRIVE THE TRUCK. This sets the big hook. I always let Della drive on the way home. Give them the responsibility of training a dog, make it a project. Leading, loading, taking care of it, all of it. Once they bond with that dog and it starts to perform, well then you have them hooked. Oh yea, AVOID taking them on SCHOOL NIGHTS, stick to Friday and Saturday nights. If you must go on school nights, make them get that home work done right after school, go hunting early and get them home early.
Now it might sound like I went to a lot of trouble with this second child. But it was worth all of it. Having your child as your main hunting buddy and them loving it as much or more than you, it just doesn't get any better than that.
Keep it fun.

Looks like a bright future in the redbone world!!! Isnt that what its all about. Great memories with family, friends, and good hounds.

Jdgher that sounds like some good advice from experience. I will try to remember that stuff for when my daughter is old enough.

Here is a video of my 7 month old daughter and our redbone. She loves being around him and you can tell from the video he loves her too. I couldnt ask for a better dog around a baby.

Not a redbone....yettt

I have 3 older daughters that all went coon hunting with me and yes, even the youngest was carried in a child carrier. My oldest, when she was young would be pushed in a stroller while running beagles. This is a picture of my son who attended a couple of night hunts with me. Thanks to Danny Cox for letting him handle this dog in his first night hunt. He got high scoring dog.
His new redbone puppy was born was born 5 May 14. We have high hopes of her.

Not any more. They are "too old" to go coon hunting now. There are too many briars and bugs. And their grandmother is afraid they might get a tick on them. They will get much worse out running around in the mall.

Your sticky smiley at the end sums your words up best. The picture reminds me of my 3 daughters and the many many nights in the woods. After going through a divorce and starting life over I have a son who has rekindled the flame. He wants to hunt every night, 8 nights a week. Looks like we will be feeding a Redbone come July. Reading these posts makes me upset of the years I missed. I have a lot of lost time to make up for and a son who is going to help.
