First black n tan

The first one I had was originally my brothers dog.He got it at eight weeks old.
He would let it play with His pet coon.I kept telling him your going to ruin that dog.
About 6 months later I traded my motorcycle for her and a gocart. One of the best deals I ever made. She would tree squirrels during the day and coons at at night. When the occasional possum would pop up you could always tell. She wouldn't tree very hard.
All I would have to say is :Blue you know better than that, go find me a coon. And she would.Oh yea My brother name her Blue and her mom was supposed to be anEnglish Redtick.DIDN'T SAY SHE WAS MY FIRST REGISTERED HOUND.But she was fun and kept me in the woods many a night as a kid from 12 to 18 never forget her.My Mandy I have here now is just like her.No leash needed!

Went back and read the original post by Billy.

Here is more to the point. My first registered Hound was out of Umpher's Ragin Black Hoss and was a natural. Had a huge locate. At 4 months old and would hit a track before the Old dogs. His bottom side was Bartley's Clyde and Hunzinger's Fancy.Because of these 2/dogs I will never coonhunt anything else.

First B&T

I got my first B&T about two years ago. Hadnt coon hunted in over 15 years since I was a kid. I grew up in Kansas City and married a girl from the country. Well we bought a place out towards her parents. I had heard there was a coon club in the next town over and decided it was time to try it out again, even though I knew nothing about it. I got hooked up with a guy out of the club that had some B&T pups on the ground. I paid $250 for a 6 month old male. He was heavy Kansas line bred. I named him PR. Missouri Slowpoke after a dog my Grandpa had. I was plain scared of the woods at night since I grew up in the city, but managed to over come it and get Slowpoke in the woods. I hunted almost 7 nights a week for a year with that dog , he treed a few coon, but wasn't worth much. One day I decided it was time to move on so with a heavy heart I culled him. It left a bad taste in my mouth for about a month but I bought another B&T male and named him Slowpoke also. Honestly it wasn't until I met Omer Hershberger that things turned around for me. He loaned me his Nt.Ch female to start my new dog with. Thanks to him, Tree Jar'N Lucy, Tree Jar'N Peanut I finally have a coon dog at the end of my lead.

Two Tone Zeb X Tucker's Black Queen. Loud, good looking, well behaved. Not much natural ability.

In the last two years:
Missouri Slowpoke-culled
Charlie-culled
Maniac Milly-culled
Sargent-culled
Stroker Ace-Given Away
Missouri Hi-Dollar Slowpoke- Still Here
Hitman-Pup
Mercenary-Pup

Got my first from my aunts akc show stock. Got her at 7 weeks old. Finished her in shows quickly and started her on coon. She was a good pleasure dog wouldn't burn up the woods but did a good job for a young kid. She's the female I started my breeding program with. Kinda wish I would of kept some of that line around. They suited me better then a lot of the UKC dogs I see today. They just looked and sounded like hounds. I'm working on getting that with a great hunt ability. Catch me in a few years hope to have something to show.

He was a barely weaned grade B&T pup I got when I was 16 years old. I named him Pete, raised him and made him my buddy. HIs first night in the woods was also my first night in the woods. I'd never been hunting at night in my life and I don't know which one of us was more scared.

I hunted him with a high school friend's walker dog and we got him started. My friend didn't know much more than I did about coonhunting. I hunted him alone and he'd go hunting on his own, work a track and get treed. He liked to hunt and run track more than he liked to tree so I better hustle to the tree or he might leave.

I got him single registered and put him in several UKC hunts and never won a thing. I didn't really expect to win, I was just along to learn and be around some coonhunters and hopefully some good dogs. The older Pete got the wider hunting he got. 2-3 miles was nothing. One time I picked him up 8 miles from where I cut him. All with no tracking system of any kind.

He was also perhaps the loudest mouth dog of any dog I've been in the woods with. If he had been gone for awhile, I'd drive a mile or 2 in the direction I thought he went and listen. I'd generally hear him, even if he was still a mile or 2 away. Sometimes I followed him on foot, which was usually a mistake. He got me 2-3 miles from the truck, on foot, several times. But I also lost him several times for 2 or more days at a time.

He was just what a bunch of folks these days think they want. Independent, loud, and wide hunting. Only one problem, he lacked coon treeing ability. I will say I was like a lot of beginners and I made some mistakes with this dog and didn't make the most of the time in the woods with him. So, I'd love to have a pup like him today. But I think he really did lack treeing and that might be his downfall.

He lived to be 15 years old and I had him put to sleep.

I think this picture was taken when he was about 10 years old. 1990 or so. The picture shows it some but his chest was too big for the rest of his body. I always said that's because of the HUGE LUNGS in there, lol.

My very first B&T that belonged to me was a yr old grade female named Walter. Bought her from an ad in the back of a magazine. The ad said Walter so I assumed it was a male.. Wrong... I didn't tell my dad I had spent $40 for a dog. I remember sitting at the dinner table and the man at the train station called and said he had a wooden box for him with a dog in it. My dad said it wasn't his but when he found out it was mine....let's say he wasn't happy. We all loaded up in the ole hunting car and went to see this B&T. Well my bubble burst when I saw this underfed, flea ridden hound and that it was a female.. She did have nice ears and big sad eyes..... A month or so later she looked 500% better after several baths, worming and eating good. She had a big horn bawl mouth and would run anything with four legs or flew. Spent many a night and day in the woods looking for her. After wearing out many a stick and several boots she became a fairly decent coon and possum dog. Weren't many coon back then and #1 possums brought a few $$. I guess her claim to fame was when she treed a 250 lb bear by herself. Everybody wanted to buy her then. She stayed with me until she died at age 14... I loved that ole dog...

My first experience with a black and tan was a dog owned by Ron Hudson. His name was Rons Black Bandit. He was sired by Weirs Hoss, and Curtsingers Oklahoma Daisy.

He was above average mouth, good track dog,and a very classy tree dog.. He had one problem,he would throw a locate while running a track. After hunting with him a few times I talked possum into letting enter him in a local akc hunt.. The end result was a cast win good enough for first place....

The first one I owned was B&B's Black Hoss. Just a good all around dog, never know he was in the pen, unless it was feeding time or time to go hunting. Super nice accurate tree dog, The only thing that held him back a little was the fact that I owned him,and he was a third or fourth strike dog.. I'd take two more just like him...

Tiny

I first b&t was a little fourty pound gyp named tiny. She was a heck of a dog of course she wasn't a go yonder dog because back then we walk hunted or road hunted. She was a pleasure to own she would strike one off the dog box. She died way to early a stray dog that was enormous broke into my pen and bred her. She died having pups. She will always have a special place in my heart.

My first black and tan was out of Haucks Andy and a female out of Gillums King ll. I did not want or like black and tan`s, and had some really good walker`s at the time. I went with my cousin to hunt with a friend of his. Long story short I bought a 6 month old pup named Andy from that guy, that treed coon behind our good dog`s. It was like he had some kind of radar or something. (lay-up dog!) He reproduced very well and I had no choice but sell the walker`s.

1st

a 9mo.old male outta StingxSmithurst? 116 coons sold year 1. A man heard about em and drove to Mtn.view to hunt w/him. I said he wasn't for sale but we went hunting after 2 coons he said $1000 I laughed (even tho we were poor) and said I sold more than that in hides this year! 2 more coon and he said $2500! I said no. On the way home he said I'll give you this Truck for him(88 Toyota 4x4) I dropped him & Super Slam off at the motel!! He canged his name and done a bunch of winning w/him I found out later. Ive raised, trained, started, finished, handled, titled & hunted against none since then that were his equal. Looking back I got ripped off!

Shouldn't have

My first was out of black mountain Dixie x jets son, had him for two years. Loud and would tree the piss out of coons, but like an idiot fella offered $600 and was hunting him at that time. At 17 $600 was good to me, but if I could find one from that litter today I would try my best to buy it.

my first

was a grade male named highball. A friend gave him to me and he taught me what a coondog was. Down side was he was bad on deer just depended on what he found first. You had to wait to see what pattern the track ran before you knew what he was runnin cause he sounded the same on both and ran a coon just as fast as a deer. Great locate and an all night tree dog. He only weighed 45-50 pounds soakin wet but he was a perfect colored black and tan with nice square head and long ears. never saw a coon get away from him on the ground. As my buddy Virgle used to say "He would fight a runnin sawmill with a willow switch". Killed a badger out huntin one night. Died from heartworms, i was just a kid and didnt know anything about that stuff back then.

My first black dog was a female I got from my buddys dad. She was 4 months old when I got her. He thought she would never amount to anything so I got her for 40 bucks. She had mostly PR dogs in her pedigree but she was mine. I hunted her dang near every night for about 9 months. She turned out to be better than any dog my buddy or his dad had lol. She had a huge male dog mouth that was super clear and everybody commented on. Somebody shot her on the chain in the field where I kept her. That got me out of hunting for about five years. I just recently got back into it and im still looking for something close to what she was. She was the best dog iv ever walked behind period.
