Walkers in Black and Tans???

When did walkers get introduced into the black and tans and is there any proof of it? If you google black and tan coonhound it talks about them being a cross from bloodhound and Virginia fox hound. Im just curious and want to learn more about the breed.

Your good. I'm full of questions my self. This is just one of those topics that has been beat to death lately and it always causes a fire storm of opinions and perspective. Glad you like B&T though.

July is a fox hound this is what was used to cross on. Now a walker is a slick treeing idiot that lies and is not in all the black breed.

BGS2009 in the origin the Black and Tan Coonhound doesn't have Treeing Walkers in them. People have crossed walkers in to the black and tans.

Check out the video link below and it will explain.

The Black and Tan Coonhound is descended from the Talbot hound, found in medieval England after the eleventh century. Its ancestry is then traced through the Bloodhound and the Foxhound to the Virginia Foxhound, commonly called the "black and tan".

Red face

The good Black dogs usually have a walker within their third generation or closer.

Mike just be glad it was only 11 trees and had at least 1 coon...LOL

I had a BNT once that I got started hunted him all summer and seen only 3 coons. It was nothing to make 5 to 10 trees a night. Never saw him leave a tree that summer and he would take tree pressure. Even saw him in a bean field treed on a bean stalk one night lucky he didn't try climbing on it as it would have broke off. Always said if he ever decided to run a deer he would probably just sit down and tree boy was I wrong.. He flat scooted out of the country 1 night and I went and got him the next day when he came into a farmers place. LOL

I don't see where it matters. ALL dog breeds go back to a wolf, if you go back far enough. B&T, Walker and the other coonhound breeds have an interwoven history. The lines between breeds weren't nearly so distinct, back then. Papers didn't mean that much and if a guy needed a registered dog, it wasn't such a big deal to just apply papers from some other dog. Most, if not all, of the foundation of the B&T breed comes through dogs that were dirty papered. If there are any left that weren't dirty papered, then their off breeding is still there, its just further back.

There is spotted dog breeding in the B&T breed history, but there is also black and tan dogs in the walker breed history. I can find walkers today that have little pumpkin seeds above their eyes and blanket backs. Tennessee Lead, a black and tan colored dog, was a foundation sire of the running walkers, who preceded the treeing walkers.

Buddy I'll let you in on a secret....the Walker breed doesn't have the monopoly when it comes to slick treeing idiots.

2 years ago I tried a 4 yo Black female from a fairly well known B&T fancier and breeder. 3 nights hunting = 19 trees, 1 tree with a squirrel and 18 slicks. I've seen more than my fair share of Black dogs that make Walkers look accurate!

The Walker breed has the most, but we're trying to catch em... A cold nosed accurate track dog cannot compete with a hot nosed semi-accurate treedog in a 2hr hunt.

Mike R that's not a secret I have seen black dogs do just what you say. But for the most part not as many and yes that hot nosed medium accurate dog is hard to beat in two hours till they miss .Look just running my mouth cuttin up seen a few good walker dogs I like. I'm not on the walker board bashing them so keep hunting what makes you happy that's what it's about anyway
