Can someone explain a night hunt to me?
I have searched many times and ways "What happens at a night hunt?" here on this and other forums. I am not finding what I am looking for.
I would like to understand how a lot of the terms are used. I have read the terms glossary here, coondawgs.com, and even Waynes at one of the kennels recommended on here somewhere. I have read the 2014 UKC rule book for night hunts and just got to be honest, it didn't make much sense too me. I get a lot of the glossary terms but what I don't understand is the circling and deleting points and why some of the dogs that struck got minus points.
This is what I can understand so far..
The cast sets out with x amount of dogs/handlers up to a total of 4?
The first dog that is struck in gets 100 pts, the second gets 75, third 50 and fourth gets 25. Now if a dog is called treed before the others strike, the ones not struck in can not receive any points for that cast? Like they have to be leased up?
The first dog called treed starts the clock at 5 mins. If the other dogs don't tree in that time they are out of getting any tree points? Do they have to be leashed up?
If they are called treed and on the same tree at arrival, do all the dogs get the same amount of tree points or is the point system in order of called like strike points?
If their is a coon in the tree all dogs called get + points for strike in their order and + tree points.
If no coon in the tree all dogs on that tree get + on strike and - on tree points? They only get + pts for strike if one of the other dogs has a coon treed? No coon found by the dogs stuck in then - pts for all the dogs called.(I understand that these are good dogs and there is going to be a coon somewhere, I'm just trying to understand when the dogs will get pts and not get pts.)
If all dogs are on separate trees and were struck in before the first call for treed, then the whole cast has to go to the first dog called and shine the tree. Their is a set time that they have to find the coon. (10 mins I think) The tree is scored accordingly and then they leash that dog and move to the second called tree? Follow this procedure until the last tree is scored. The forth dog may have to hold the tree for 40 or 50 mins?
The dog gets a circle around the tree pts if the cast splits on whether their is a coon or not? What does the circle mean?
If the majority says yes it's + pts and no it's - pts.
The delete pts is for when the coon is in refuge and can't be hunted? No gain or penalty for the dogs
Please understand that I am trying to understand the sport. I know only what I have read here and other sites. I don't know anybody that hunts competitively and I am interested in it if I ever get a hound that is accurate. I read a lot about how their is a lot of people getting taken at these hunts by ill handlers or judges not knowing the rules or sticking to them.
Thanks for the help
Joel
