Ears can be a pain if you aren't prepared for them. With out knowing the extent of the wound, it would be one of two ways that I would suggest. Salves, bandages, mud, flour.......will be a lesson in frustration the first time around. The more ointment, flour, mud, bandages, etc that you put on his ear, the more he will be determined to shake it off and will result in the bleeding all over again. Pressure by laying the ear between the palm of your hands between sterile (if available), damp 4"x4" gauze pads until the bleeding stops. Paint the ear up with some Wound Kote (blue spray) until scabbed over. Depending on the size of the wound, excessive scabbing may cause him to shake and bust them back open. If he is a pup, it will be an ongoing battle with you to keep it clean and positioned to heal as fast as you can. Expect him to have them busted back open again in the morning. Repeat as necessary. If you note any infection, you'll have to make a run to the vet to have him/her take a look at the bacteria under the scope or he may opt to give you a broad spectrum antibiotic. If it were my dog and an infection was present, I'd want them to identify if it was gram positive or gram negative so they can directly treat it. Canines, like humans, will build up a tolerance to antibiotics if given all the time. When you may really need them, they may not have the bang your dog needs.
