cut ear

I beleive my pup caught something on the ground tonight that got the best of him. He squawed out and i tried getting to him but water was up to my waist. I finally called him in and he was bleeding pretty good from the ear. I put flour on it but it still seems to be bleeding. Any thing else i can do?

Blood stopper from tractor supply will clot it up then you can asses the issue. Super glue works good for me once the bleeding has stop and you have cleaned the wound.

Mud if you don't have anything else, it will help stop the bleeding.

Ears can be a pain if you aren't prepared for them. With out knowing the extent of the wound, it would be one of two ways that I would suggest. Salves, bandages, mud, flour.......will be a lesson in frustration the first time around. The more ointment, flour, mud, bandages, etc that you put on his ear, the more he will be determined to shake it off and will result in the bleeding all over again. Pressure by laying the ear between the palm of your hands between sterile (if available), damp 4"x4" gauze pads until the bleeding stops. Paint the ear up with some Wound Kote (blue spray) until scabbed over. Depending on the size of the wound, excessive scabbing may cause him to shake and bust them back open. If he is a pup, it will be an ongoing battle with you to keep it clean and positioned to heal as fast as you can. Expect him to have them busted back open again in the morning. Repeat as necessary. If you note any infection, you'll have to make a run to the vet to have him/her take a look at the bacteria under the scope or he may opt to give you a broad spectrum antibiotic. If it were my dog and an infection was present, I'd want them to identify if it was gram positive or gram negative so they can directly treat it. Canines, like humans, will build up a tolerance to antibiotics if given all the time. When you may really need them, they may not have the bang your dog needs.

We always keep a can of the blue cut spray in the truck. It disinfects and stops bleeding. It has worked wonders for us a many a time on ear cuts and about any cut, its pretty cheap. I think we got ours at tractor supply...

They make a product called "Wonder Dust" it has a coagulant ingredients to help with healing in it. It is designed for horses, but it works great on dogs as well. I keep a bottle in the truck.

Yep.. Wonder dust will do the job, another tip is to cut the toe off an old sock and stretch it over the head with the ear folded up, keeps them from slinging that ear.

Ears always bleed really bad.

I've heard old men say that a cut ear can bleed a dog to death, but I've never seen it happen personally.

BLEEDING EAR

A old hunting buddy of mine in Alabama had a dogs ear start bleeding real bad one night, he said they tried everything to get it to stop but nothing worked. He said the last idea was to BURN where it was bleeding and it worked. He then called his dog Silver Creek Burn.
