Very well said, Richard. I was thinking the same thing. I've allways said that if a dog does'nt miss once and a while then its probally not a very quick dog to get treed. In my mind breeding is a balancing act of traits. Accuracy vs getting treed quick, cold-nosed vs hot-nosed, track vs tree. The examples go on and on but in the end its all about a balanced hound from track to tree.
What I look for in my mutts is a little bit of everything. They must be fairly accurate and quick to get treed being decisive about it and not just taking thier time settling into a tree. I want them to be medium-nosed so they can still take an older track, but won't fool with those tracks that would take half the night to tree. I want them running off head up when looking for a track and able to drift a good track without runnig past trees. If they open I expect them to move it fast and get treed in a timely fashion. My list of requirements goes on and on. Too much to type. Lol.
Anyhow when looking at a stud I look for what will compliment what I allready have the most and mantain the balance I'm looking for. However to answer your original question, John I'd say I want 80% or better accuracy while still being quick to get hooked.
