I beleive if their able to cross logs and get over ditches their big enough to make a couple drops a week. Careful not to over do it but it will let you know when its had enough for the night. I just make one drop with each pup at first so they dont tire out. My pups usally start early. They wont start on the chain thats for sure.

my main concern is she may get hurt around tree and may shy her away from wanting to tree when she gets older

Well now thats a differnt story. I wouldnt want to hunt her around no aligator tree dog. If you know the dog your turning her loose with is mean around the tree dont turn her loose.

I'm in the same shoes you are. I've got to pups I kept off a litter I raised that are 7 months old. Just take it slow don't push them to hard, when there ready to hit the woods hard you will know. Let them grow up you will have a better dog. Taking a pup that is not ready can create some bad habits also. Good luck with you pup.

Maybe I should have said also, a pup is never to young to take in the woods. I let mine run loose until they start wondering off and going hunting. I like to let them figure how cross creeks, get under fences and such. You can't expect a pup to go hunt if it has just been raised in a pen.

Thats exactly right. This pup ran loose till he was 6 months old. The first day we put him up. The next night we took him hunting and he split treed on a den.

I usually start taking mine around 4 1/5 to 5 months.. What I do is hunt them for an hour or we tree the first coon. Then if we are going to keep hunting I usually put the pup in the box for the rest of the hunt. I do this till the are about 7 months old. Once they are 7 months old I hunt them as long as we hunt most times.

All of ours run loose till right at 6 months then they get to start the real thing . I'm not much on taking them out with dogs hunting before that age . The little ones have a hard time keeping up don't want them to start running the dogs instaed of running a track . There is nothing wrong with taking your pup by it's self and letting it wonder around , learn to navigate in the timber , fences , creeks & you never know my older dog I hunt treed his 1st coon at 12 wks old (he struck it off the lead ,turned him loose he ran a track & treed a coon - & it was not a turned loose coon or off a bucket , we've never looked back in 7 yrs now some are naturals ) like someone else said a pup doesn't learn anything in a pen . At 5 months taking him out to the woods & letting him explore , teaching him to come when called , to lead , to mind are more important than actually taking him hunting . No matter when you start your pup remember patience is key you've got to let it be a puppy & don't expect to much . To many owners get frustrated at a pup for not hunting and treeing their own coon at a young age . Not all take off like a ball of fire right from the start . The few that do spoil us to this notion when in reality most take a little longer to get it all figured out . More pups a messed up by improper training than by lack of ability so be careful & most importantly when you take your pup with dogs hunting don't take it with anything the least bit mean & make it be with something straight & only one pup at a time when you start working him at night . Good luck & and have fun with your pup !

Oh and one other thing you may want to work on your other dog jacking the tree - it is not the best enviroment to have this little female in your wanting to start . And it is also the way many dog fights get stared when you hunt with other dogs . Some that are not the least bit aggressive won't put up with a dog bouncing all over them & knocking them off the tree . I would work on fixing the other dog before I took her hunting with it .

Mine I snap up to their leash and every time they jump I bring them back down . I saw something interesting on here a week or so back that involved tennis balls - look up the tree jacking thread shouldn't be to far back .
I just wouldn't want a 5 month old pup getting knocked around to much at trees . Good luck with both of them .
