All of ours run loose till right at 6 months then they get to start the real thing . I'm not much on taking them out with dogs hunting before that age . The little ones have a hard time keeping up don't want them to start running the dogs instaed of running a track . There is nothing wrong with taking your pup by it's self and letting it wonder around , learn to navigate in the timber , fences , creeks & you never know my older dog I hunt treed his 1st coon at 12 wks old (he struck it off the lead ,turned him loose he ran a track & treed a coon - & it was not a turned loose coon or off a bucket , we've never looked back in 7 yrs now some are naturals ) like someone else said a pup doesn't learn anything in a pen . At 5 months taking him out to the woods & letting him explore , teaching him to come when called , to lead , to mind are more important than actually taking him hunting . No matter when you start your pup remember patience is key you've got to let it be a puppy & don't expect to much . To many owners get frustrated at a pup for not hunting and treeing their own coon at a young age . Not all take off like a ball of fire right from the start . The few that do spoil us to this notion when in reality most take a little longer to get it all figured out . More pups a messed up by improper training than by lack of ability so be careful & most importantly when you take your pup with dogs hunting don't take it with anything the least bit mean & make it be with something straight & only one pup at a time when you start working him at night .
