pup makes me want to pull my hair out.

I got this 8 month old pup that drives me crazy. He will open on a feild mouse. He has treed a few coons while ive been hunting him by his self but its got to the point were i think hes going backwards. I dont hunt him every night but at least 3-4 nights a week by his self. Tonight he got on the river bank and i beleive he was running beavers cause i could here them splashing and he was barking on the water. So i go catch him and put him in the woods across the road. He went right back to the river. Then i catch him and drive down the road about 600 yds and put him in the woods. He went up the road and done the same thing. I think i need to hunt him a little with other dogs. What do you all think?

You have to remember. He's just an 8 month old pup. And if he's already treed some coons for you that is great. I wouldn't really hunt him with other dogs. He is young. My suggestion would be to lay him up for about two months and let him mature a little. Then pull him back out. An old dog can help and hurt. If he can do it on his on let him continue too and he can't pick up another dogs bad habits. Good luck.

i would hunt him. he needs a little training. you cant lay him up an expect him to come out trained. work with him. try getting him to understand what he should run and what he shouldnt be messing with.

geeeez

he is 8 months old............you could be coming on here asking "how come my 8 month old isnt going hunting". At least he is doing something. 2 x's a week would actually be plenty, he probably isnt even lifting his leg yet so I would actually be pretty satisfied if he is showing to be some what interested and is going hunting.

Yeah tom i get what your saying but dang i get frustrated with him. It aint the junk that makes me frustrated its he dont want to go in the woods. He wants to run roads or run feilds. And hes gonna get open on something.

what your dog is doing is what makes good dogs so valuable. i know a lot about sorry dogs because that's what i mostly keep. maybe they were good dogs until i messed them up. i just keep taking them to the woods and be happy i'm bless enough to have dogs, the time to hunt, the place to hunt and good health. Gods' grace is sufficient for me.

i c

Can u keep him in a river bank? Do you road your dogs? That causes it alot of times. Take him a few times with a older dog then back to solo, gotta try something or he'll get ran over

I have never road hunted him. He was haveing trouble getting across ditches that had water in them so ive been putting him around water the last two weeks. Now you cant keep him away from it. I beleive he needs about two or three nights out with a good older dog and then go back solo.

I wouldn't lay him up either ...on pups some by himself & some with something straight & not mean in any way , it will help him to see what his purpose in life is - to tree you coons . If he's actually going hunting & has treed coons by himself you've got a head start on most his age . Remember he's just a puppy they are like kids - make you want to pull your hair out half the time , then they grow up before your eyes and become adults all of a sudden most the time they don't drive you crazy lol . Good luck & keep at it he'll turn out .

Yeah i dont lay my dogs up. I feed them to hunt. If they learned to tree coons on a chain everybody would have coon dogs. Thats kinda the idea i had. Hunt him some with company and hunt him some by his self. He should make a good hound once he figures it out. He started real early and easy. Finishing him out is gonna drive me crazy but im sure i can do it. Thanks to every one who gave me their in put.

Well the lil pup is looking better. Took him out last night by his self and he went hunting good. Made to trees with in a hour. One coon and a opposum. I let him know the opposum i wasnt proud of. After that he treed the coon.

I don't understand one post you say it is okay for your dog to run a deer as long as it falls off on a coon or something along that line, now you are getting on to a pup for treeing a possum.

A opposum gets you 200 minus if he strikes first and a deer gets you a 100 strike points its simple. You cant hide a opposum stareing down. You can hide a deer. I dont raise pups to plesure hunt i raise them to compition hunt.

To each his own. I dont look down to the man that lets his dog tree opposums. If i didnt compition hunt id let mine tree them too. Every body likes differnt things in a dog. I like mine to get open. Dont care if he opens on a deer or what as long as he gets treed with a coon. Thats just me.

You are right to each his own. I pleasure hunt and that is one reason that your trash runner can beat a straight dog. I break mine from treeing possums but you was asking about your dog not hunting and when he hunts and trees something you get on to him.I am not a dog trainer by no means so. Was you the guy not wanting to use a shocker about a month ago or am I mistaken. So you now raise pups to comp. hunt being so new to it and all.

I didnt have a shock collor to use if your memory was so good you would rember that. I got one now and i still let him run the deer. He just knows when to get off of them now that i got a shock collor. Sure im new to compition hunting but my dad aint and if he tells me what it takes to win and thats what ive been doing. Nothin against a pleaure hunter like i said to each his own and if i want my dog to strike on a deer and run it for 10 mins he can and you dont have to like it. But when he trees a oppsum a get on to him cuz i dont like it. Hes mine and i can do that. I dont beat him for it cause he is young and hes doing better than most his age i think. Notice i said I THINK. And to me it dont matter what you think. So happy hunting and i hope you tree them all.

A dog that is honest in every way will win you more hunts in the end & will be a pleasure to hunt during the week . A first srtike dog is not as important as a first tree dog . When one is running a deer someone else is treeing coons . Comp hunt , train pups & pleasure hunt .

I do remember you not having one because dad didn't like them, but I agree with Mafia keep it honest. I have done my fair share of hunts and if it's not a pleasure to hunt during the week not going to be as good on the weekends. I might have started this whole thing out wrong. I am no pro dog trainer by no means, I get on to see what people recommend for a training problem and here you are saying let it run a deer, then you have a problem and in your post you are on your dog for running something that at least will climb. I just don't understand they are both trash and if you are honest you know running a deer and falling treed is not a good way to win anything. Mafia gives some great advise along with others and I appreciate those that do so ease up on the pro training tips it could be a kid you are talking to that don't know when not to take some bs advise. Happy hunting a good luck with your pup and I truly mean that.

Bs advice? Well id suggest that they not ask questoins on here. I had a guy try and tell me to shoot my dog. What kind of advice is that? And im not gonna advise any one to do nothing i dont know that works. I hunt. I dont sit around all night and talk about going. Its 10 degrees here and i just walked through the door. And i hunt every night. Now as far as a honest dog. Thats good if you got one but i dont i have pups. Not a dog in my kennel over 18 months old. And the pup i hunt the most is 8 months old. He split treed tonight on a den then ran one out the country. Im not gonna try very hard to break him off nothing right now. Hes 8 months old. You dont spank your kids at 2 do you? Same way with pups. I like the advice i get on here. Alot of it is good advice. But then theirs some that i dont think hunt to begin with. Im gonna give who ever ask for advice the advice i would use. Nobody has to use it. Im no pro by no means but im learning. Like i said twice already to each his own.

Your right to go easy on an 8 mo old pup . But in the end if you want a good comp dog break it off all junk . And you'll have alot more fun through the week & get your dogs pic taken more often too .
