A Stephens Cur is a tree dog

They are anywhere from solid black to half black and half white in color wt ranges from upper 20's to lower 60's depending on whose stock of Stevens it is.

stephen cur

I talked to a man in OK. Monday and he was coonhunting with a Stephen cur and was treeing coon. I'm a coonhunter in Texas and was wondering about these dogs. Thanks for your info.

From the guys I've talked to, and what I can tell, most of the Stephen's Curs are used as coondogs. There are people that squirrel hunt them too, but generally they are thought of as a coondog in the Cur community.

All of them I've ever seen or seen pictures of are black or black and white. Their nickname is "The Little Black Dogs." They are good looking dogs and supposed to be coon treeing little suckers.

Foggy Mountain Mike owned by Junior King of Albany IN is one of the best squirrel dogs out there and has won his share in the hunts. Mike is as good of a coon dog as he is a squirrel dog too.
If you want to put some drive and tree in to your pups you should consider breeding to Mike, but do it quick he's getting old.

Here is a video of Mike & Tuesday (BMC) from this past weekend.
