I have a 1/2 elkhound 1/2 Kemmer cur. He looks like an elkhound with a bobbed tail and solid yellow in color. In no way does he look like a full blood anything. Nice squirrel dog though and I would like to put him in some hunts. Is there any way to register him? Thanks

You should be able to single register him as a treeing cur.

yeah TC is your ticket to getting them registered. Treeing Curs are to the cur world what English are to the coon hounds. I hunt treeing curs but there is somethings I would do different if I was boss lol.

You can probably register it as WTDA. Both are treedog breeds so I am almost certain you can register it right at a hunt if you take it to one. Ohio has WTDA hunts there.

You dog could probably be registered as a Treeing Cur, but I can't say for sure. Even Treeing Curs, with their more open breed standard than other Cur breeds, have to reflect Cur type when being single registered. Most often the ones that don't make the cut are 3/4 hound and show too many hound characteristics.

Having never seen your dog, or any Cur/Elkhound cross, I can't say for sure if your dog displays enough "Cur type" to be singled or not. It's hard to say since your not dealing with your standard half Cur / half hound cross, but rather with a half Cur / half Northern Breed cross.

There are plenty of registries that will register it T/C if UKC won't. Just like at the onset of registering curs, UKC always has to be a pain. And again that is one of the reasons no one wants to attend their cur & feist hunts.

I also feel that Treeing curs should be hound/cur, hound feists or cur/ feist and that is it. But that is just me I reckon.

So what is wrong with all the spitz/feist crosses out there. I have known some exceptional dogs of that cross. They should just be excluded?

I have seen a few nice ones as well. I guess what I am saying is that for me I prefer crosses from tree dog families. I didn't mean to sound as if I was against other crosses being registered. Now that I read my post I can see where that could sound as such. My bad.

Spitz are about as treedog as they get, Elkhound also. As a matter of fact those Elkhounds are super gritty. I know many bear hunters that cross them into their hounds. There ain't much back up in them at all.

Don't get me wrong, they aren't my kind of dogs but they are treedogs. As a matter of fact from what I have seen and witnessed, you don't want to have a full Spitz. Them jokers are super hard headed and have a motor like a hound. About a 1/4 or 1/2 is about all it takes to make one go and put winding in them.

I am pretty sure an elkhound won a WTDA hunt in Laurelville one year. Not sure if it was the state hunt or not.

i agree with tim. the pure spitz I seen and trained were gone like a hound or husky cut them out and there GONE and the ones I seen didn't home well if game wasn't moving.i never hunted with a cossed up one. a buddy of mine hunted and bred elk hounds for years on coon and squrr.they were good tree dogs and always seem to have the meat. they just seemed to porky and slow for my liking mind you he always kept them to fat. I have seen crossed up ones that dick bare of ohio had the good ones were hard to beat in any mans books. iam not a great fan of long haired dogs it seems we have far to many bur patches and it takes hrs to get this matted mess out of there hair.

I had another buddy tell me WTDA. I've never owned an elkhound but his grit and drive would make a coonhound blush. By far a better squirrel dog but he will get treed no matter the game even if he has to go 700 yards to do it. Kill a foot shot boar coon without backing up 1 step. He's far from perfect but I like him. Hope to cross him on a silent walker female here soon.
