!!!Lurcher Pups!!!

I will be having a litter of lurchers in early Aug.

Sire: Boarder Collie, even tempered, very well built, hunting on the brain, best boarder I've seen.

Dam: Staghound, 26" tts, not too hairy, extreamly fast, neck dog, runs track, handles well, game as anything.

I'll be keeping a one for myself and the rest will be sold.

$300/ea.

Sire:

Dam:

What do you use them on?

Anything. Your not going to hear an old fashioned hound race with them but they will be able to run track, most should tree and all can be taught to tree if they don't come on to it early. They will be exceptionally fast. Some will have the sand to handle coyotes but as with most breeds they will need some help (a couple of other dogs for the catch) but should be able to hold one by themselves. I'm using them on bobcat. You just can't get around the boarder collie brain. That is what makes them so versatile. They should make great fox, cat and coon dogs. Squirrel should be no problem. They should retrieve well if taught well. They can be used on fowl both water and upland and if taught, they will know the difference between the animals at your home and the animals to be hunted. Of course this all takes a good trainer but if you know how to handle dogs, try and come up with something they can't do.

In Europe the gypsies taught them to steel things and poach game in complex hunting situations were if you got caught you go to jail or hard labor.

This cross is kind of like making mules. It's a cross that just works very well and produces offspring that are capable of more than the parents.

Put the extreme physical ability of a great sighthound together with the extreme mental ability of the boarder collie and look out! There's a dog that can do more things than any other dog on the planet.

I'll be keeping two.

Update....

They have their second worming and will be ready to go in a couple of weeks. 8 weeks old is the perfect time to go to their new home and start obedience training and getting used to their new owner. I have to males left. No one has made their picks so it could be any of them. I have my female picked but I'm not sure which male I like yet.

Dan, I sure think this litter is going to be fun to watch grow up. Depending on who raises them and feeds them, they should make some interesting hunting dogs.

Lurchers...

Brogy- Definitely! I've been thinking about doing this for 12 years now. It wasn't until I got Streak that I thought I had a good enough dog to do this with. It took almost two years to find the kind of boarder collie that I wanted to use for the other half. There is a level of smarts that I was looking for on the collie side of the breeding that was hard to find. There are a lot of smart b.c.'s out there but there is a certain type that is hard hitting and has a level of intelligence that is a step above (even for a boarder collie) and it's hard to find that in the same dog. It's a lot like finding a hound that is a world class track dog and a world class layup dog at the same time. It sure took a lot of gas money and time but when I saw Gem work I knew I was finally looking at the kind of dog that I wanted. I already see some of the characteristics in his pups and their only 6 weeks old. Next week I'll begin doing a series of intelligence tests that I have for dogs. It's a really neat thing. I got a book for testing smarts in dogs with some simple tasks that any dog will willingly try and accomplish. How they go about it tells volumes about what level of intelligence they possess and you can put them in order of capability. It works on hounds too only if you've done these tests on boarder collies and lurchers, it makes you feel bad for the hounds!

Good looking batch of pups Dan. Sure do like that white male. If I didn't have a Leopard and Mtn Cur playing varmit control already I'd try one of these. Bet they'd be hell on keeping things off the property.

Crossing...

I'd like to see one of these crossed on a good leopard...oh, wait...there's a good chance it will if all goes well. The bobcats better start evolving fast because there isn't much time left now!

1 Left...

I still have one left. There's been a surprising amount of interest in these dogs. To me it has been unusual because you don't see these kind of dogs very often and I didn't think there would be many people that even knew what to do with them but I got to meet a lot of neat folks that sure knew what a collie-lurcher was capable of and I learned a few things along the way. This is already shaping up to be a very fun project!!!

Here's an updated picture. They're coming along very well and showing the brains of their boarder collie sire and obviously starting to show the body of their dam.

I love that white faced one with the head spot and one black ear.
The dam is gorgeous too. How are the pups doing?

...

Eric- They're going to have some bodies on them. It will be interesting to see how close these pups can come to the speed of their mother.

chellesboys- The white one has gotten the most comments from early on. He barks the most and is pretty likely to be a tree dog. He barks for what he wants but isn't a nuisance in the kennel. You should see him when he's got a big chunk of meat all to himself. He just sits there knawing on it talking away. I should take a video of it because it's very peculiar. They are a unique bunch of pups and they are the only pups of this type that I know of but I'm sure someone has done this before. The thing that will make the difference with these is that the sire is way above the mark and has got something most other boarder collies do not.
