You ask one you get one. I mean you hunt 2 hrs in the morning, 2 hrs in the evening and if you have been real successful 2 hrs the next day. How often/much do you hunt your dog on a pleasure hunt? We usually hunt 3-4 hours mornings and evenings.

In my opinion being in hunting shape and hydration would be key..

That is true, much of it depends on the dog, demeanor of the dog while at the hunt etc. I had one I was hunting some comp. and as long as I stayed around him he would lay around and rest between hunts. If I walked away he would pace and bark his head off. If I didn't hang around him he would be worn out if I was hunting him in the coon hunt that night.

The ones you see laying around like mutts are usually the ones that go out of there like rockets. They have enough sense to rest up. I have a female now that a friend is hunting for me and she will lay down in the midst of a bunch of guys raising all kind of crap and sleep. But she will be ready to go when it is time to hunt.

i don't compettion hunt but you might mix a cup of coffee with their food or maybe some ground up coffee. might not last long enough to make it through a hunt. wouldn't be fair to your dog or the other hunters either.

Bubbas, the Famous Dog Man told me one time that if you want to pep a dog up all you had to do is use that old trick that them bubbas that roll them dogs use. Now bubbas I am not going to tell you what that "old trick" is, but I have told you what kind of bubbas to ask.
