cold nose /hot nose

I 'm just curious , i always see on different threads where people state that the cold nose has been bred out of certain strains . How can that be ? If you took a dog that ran a cold track and one that ran hot tracks would they not have the same number of scent receptors ? So is it more a case of intelligence , desire or training style ?

that is a interesting point!!!

In my mind cold nose would mean a dog that has a strong desire to trail something to find it and a hot nosed dog doesn't have the desire to trail so much as to chase after something to catch.

I'm not sure it can be trained becuase if you hunt a cold nose and a hot nosed dog together the hot nosed dog will remain hot nosed from what i have seen.

I agree with your definition Chip . I always would increase the time i would let a pup go on a training coon to get them to work older scent trails . Seem to help DEVELOP a colder nose .
