cur crosses
I have a redtick female squirrel dog that I purchased last year that came from Ohio. I was told that she is a English/Cur cross. I am not convinced that she has much if any Cur blood in her. Needless to say when she came in heat I started looking to find a Cur/Hound cross male to breed her to that was local or not too far away to breed to. For various reasons, all my own quirks or preferences, I didn't find a male of cur/hound cross to breed her to. So as a result I bred her to one of my good hunting buddies Dual Champion English males. He met a couple of the criteria that I wanted in the stud dog in order to considering it for breeding to my female. He is a silent track dog who is off of a silent track-mouthed mother. He is a hard hunting, looking to get treed , hard tree dog. He is off of a cross that reproduced several offspring that ran and treed at an early age. He is a friendly, not overly hyper dog who loves to go. My female is a good handling, hard-working, looking to get treed, hard-treeing, loud mouthed, action packed medium sized hound in whom I have been extremely pleased to own and hunt. I registered her in USDR and got an eighth place in her first and only squirrel hunt, that to my knowledge, she has ever been in. I have taken her coon hunting twice since I have owned her and she has treed on trees that were more likely than not squirrel scented trees and on some legitimate "circle" trees for coon. (den trees and large very leafy water-oaks) I have yet to find a coon in her trees made but I feel like she should tree coons based upon what I have seen from her. I have no definite clue as what her breeding is from but was told that her English breeding goes back to Swamp Rooster and was given no clue as to what her cur breeding comes from. The stud dog nicknamed "Shag" by his owner Donald Miller of Cameron NC is off of Dual Gr. Gibbons Uptight Spike and Donald's Nt Ch female, with wins toward Grand, named Mabel. Mabel is by far one of the most accurate dogs that I have ever hunted with. Pups should be here around August 21st to 24th and by the looks of my female there should be a plenty. "Shag" is out of a litter of 14!!! I made this cross to get another squirrel dog to hunt but I will also try coon hunting with these pups as well. This is my first cross of proposed squirrel dogs so I hope it turns out to be successful. So in a long drawn out nut shell this is my feeling about hound crosses for squirrel hunting, Hopefully this cross won't turn out to be a total bust.!!!???
