What do you guys do when your dogs pull up short? Switch them, pull them off the tree and say nothing, shock them......?

me personally I don't get mad at the dog he may have found where the scent ended and the coon or what ever your dog decided to trail ended at the ground and up the side of that tree but then it coulda moved to another tree from lib to limb before dog got there....ur not always gonna get one inna tree just pull himm off and send him off again or maybe while shining the tree u missed it but ur dog was right....I always just put dog back on ground and send him out if it becomes more and more take a few weeks and work him some more but just move him to a new spot or off that tree and let him go again

I count it as a coon seen, pet em up & tell em good dog, & add it to the internet accuracy percentage total! J/K

Cut him and send him on get tuff on him if needed I don't use them for breeding that's what's wrong with a lot of dogs today someone breed to slick tree makin dogs together when they should have shot them

these hard tree dogs of today need no encouragement to tree you can pet them and rev them up they will grab every tree in woods ,,,,,some will even get mean by to much revin up at tree ,,,,when i have a young dog like this i dont pet them at the tree i wiill scold them and maybe get a little rougher at slick trees some can be slowed down on slick treein

Frog dog no I didn't say that but will tell u most dogs here lately will tree too much and a lot can be corrected if u will show them they are wrong I am hunting a dog right now that will miss! And when he don't have a coon or a good den he gets brushed up and sent on and here lately u can see it has helped. If there is one alive that has a coon every time he trees I prob wouldn't want the hot nosed thing lol

There is a difference between a slick treein idiot and one that will miss a coon here and there! And I want follow one that slick trees every time I take him what is he good for other than a sore neck

i let mine know im not happy and back to the truck we go....



to me, getting them to move on could lead to them leaving trees, loosing confidence, checking too hard, not wanting to tree...


usually just a "NO!" and pull him off the tree is enough..he knows if i dont pet him i aint happy and he messed up..

I don't believe in beating a dog I will scold them and I bust his butt but u can't always blame the dog sometimes its the trainers falute most times not....to shoot a dog that's just wrong I know people like that id love to ring there neck give him to a kid or a family....I got a 10 month old english and u know he misses and when he does I tell him nope try again in a firm voice he tucks his tail and I bring him back off the tree scold him a bit and turn him loose again but he still needs work but I know this as well and honestly I think he's a good dog has his falutes and still young where he needs a lot of work id never beat him or consider a bullet just more training and a little trickery while training like false trees where his drag is at and ill go back to my second stage of tree training I do that's what I do honesty when they false tree and nothing there

When hunting a young dog , as a rule . Never end the night on a whipping off a slick tree . If your going to whip one on a slick ; make sure you get them under a coon and end the night on a good note . If you whip a young dog off a slick and put them in the box; they didn't learn anything . If your hunting a finished dog , it's not as bad , but with young dogs I try to never end the night on a bad note

How would u like it if ur kids were at school messed up and the shot them or didn't. Give himm/her a chance at something and just fixed or shot them same with a dog its gotta be taught and it will come around some dogs take off later than others like my english not much work on him till I got my hands on him he's behind yes but he knows a coon ans scent won't run trash just yound dumb and pees on everythng in site in the woods but he's good dog well mannered will tree but won't open up....last night took him hunting he walked right by a possum and left a fresh bear track alone but my buddys dog now he's 5 and he went off on the bear track but my dog went on searchin for coon he didn't find one but u know what he got extra meal and a good time cuase he didn't run bs or that bear track I'm happy but wish he'd had one.

Its dogs not kids someone will more then likely end up with this dog and make it a Nitech and raise pups from it. Its getting harder and harder to find a good dog now because of this

How in the world has shooting a dog become an accepted practice among coon hunters? That is incredibly sick and twisted. There is always some little boy or girl who would be thrilled to have your cull. The only dog that should ever get a bullet is a sick dog or a mean dog. You as a human being are responsible for your dogs life. Neuter or spade it and find it a good home.

By the way, I have one of those that some of y'all would have shot. The dog showed a lot of promise early on, but began a horrible run of slicking treeing until after 2 years old. There were glimpses of greatness here and there but way more frustration than a lot of you would apparently have not let him lived for. He is almost 8 and still at my house and there is not another dog I trust more when I hear the big bawlin locate.

Yes, mine gets the bug every now an then, But I also remember walking behind you while going from one after another, on a couple different nights. In fact that dog has his own quirky behavior where he'll start leaving the tree before you arrive to whoop him!

BUT that dog has other endearing qualities that has kept him in your kennel for many years!

These posts always get like this everybody has their way some are super hard asses on here the next is way too soft then we mix how to discipline our kids it's just crazy the posts can't be just normal coon hunters talkin training tactic without criticizing the next guy if your dog never a misses GREAT if they miss some but u still like em GREAT that's really what matters

What I do if dog pulls short pending what kinda tree we talkin bout like an aweful slick no excuse for it usually give em a lil boot and tell em get their butt outta here send em on

If it's a tree where coon could have slipped em prob just grab em off send em on and it all really depends on what type hound I hunting finished or young dog are they good bout having coon or not

Lotta bad comes from all this expert "TRAINING" usually just gotta read the hound your hunting some need wooped some need extra praise
