Bench Braking Pups/Dogs.

Other than "practice makes perfect", what do you think the best techniques are to use on the bench when the dog is fairly young? Lets say 6 months and younger. How much do you expect of the dog at that age, and how often do you practice? I've been working with my 5 month old pup and she's doing very well for her age. I'm quite pleased. I just wanted to see what others think, especially if the young puppy is "bad" on the bench lol.

Id say probably no more than 5-10 min per session when pup is young. there will be several times as the pup grows and it will "lose" its feet. I cant work with them at all on the bench during those times. I get frustrated and wonder why I kept "that" pup!!! treating and praising them works well. you want them to enjoy being up there. sometimes working them on the ground where they are comfortable is better than starting on the bench where its high off the ground. each dog is different and some can take it, others cant. when the feet go bad, work on the lead breaking and gaiting. its a very aggravating and frustrating process sometimes. if you get aggravated, let the dog down and come back later when you are calm....do not take it out on the dog. you will do more harm than good.

if a really "bad" dog, then shorter segments, but more often may work and focus on one thing at a time: holding its head, keeping feet in place, etc

good luck

sometimes you can push back on their breastbone until you feel resistance, then release. others you can pull on the base (where it meets body) of the tail until you feel resistance then release. both of those methods have worked for me, just depends on the dog.

Im assuming the pup pics are of the same dog. you can look at the feet and see a definite difference depending on age. then look at the pic with the person's hand in it and you can tell a diff in the feet. every dog I've had "lost" their feet and then as they got older the feet came back.

The black dog is not mine, just someone showing the progression of their hound.

Thanks for the advice. I am just trying to get an idea of what works for other people when they're training their pups. It took me a year to get my male to.behave correctly on the bench. He has great bloodlines and knows what he's supposed to do it just took a little while. Part of that is probably me because he's the first dog I've ever trained. My bluetick puppy seems to be progressing more quickly than my male did. I've learned everything I know from Amanda A. And I'm still learning so any advice is welcome. Thanks for the input.

for most dogs pulling forward does not work in correcting the dog when pushing back. the dog will just push back farther when you quit pulling. in my experience

Those are 6 different pups from 3 different litters .... I don't claim to be a show dog person ... but I can get puppies and pups to showing on their own and comfortable .. all but one of those pics have the pups eyes forward and not on me and holding themselves up ...

and the puppy class is 6-12 m, so unless you tell us how old, that pup could have been 11m, 30d old and still classified as pup...having already gone thru the feet stages

What do you do if they have a big "hunch" or "hump" in their back at a young age?
