CENTER, MO. -- Rescue workers are still scratching their heads over who that priest was who came to the rescue Sunday morning.

That's when emergency workers spent more than an hour freeing 19-year-old Katie Lentz of Quincy from her car.

Medical crews said she was failing fast.

Witnesses said_a mysterious priest came out of no where to pray with rescue workers and Katie.

Ralls County Sheriff's Deputy Richard Adair was the first rescue worker on the. About an hour into the rescue, the situation became_dire.

"The fire chief, Raymond Reed, had stepped back and came up to me and said he was concerned cause he was out of options," Adair said. "His tools weren't working and by that time, it as almost an hour and said I don't know how we're going to get her out. I said, 'Raymond, I promised her mother and her that we'd get her out. We have to get her out,' and he said I know and went back."

Ten minutes later, Katie asked those around her to pray out loud with her. That's when they say a priest walked up from the north part of the highway. No one saw how he got there. Reed says the highway was blocked for two to three miles, and emergency responders were not letting anyone past the road blocks.

"My first thought was that it would possibly send the wrong message to Katie that maybe we had called a priest and thought she wasn't going to make it," Adair said. "So I went back and talked to the priest and told him we were worried she would think we'd given up hope. He said, 'I just want to anoint her and so we just let him come up to the scene."

Witnesses say he anointed Katie and her rescuers with oil, prayed with them, asking them to remain calm and saying that the crew's equipment would work.

The Hannibal Fire Department pulled up shortly after with fresh equipment and was able to free Katie. After getting her in the Air Evac helicopter, rescue workers said the priest was no where in sight. New London Fire Chief Raymond Reed said the department ended up taking 80 photos of the scene. He said_the priest did not appear in any of them.

"I've done this a long time, and it's probably the most horrific accident I've ever seen," Adair said. "Twenty-seven years as a police officer, and I've never seen a person as strong as she is."

The_Diocese of Jefferson City_said_it has not located the priest involved.

"The Diocese has not been contacted by any of its priests assigned in the area, or elsewhere in the Diocese, that they were involved in this matter,_Director of Communications Dan Joyce said. "Out of respect for the privacy of any priest who may have been involved and does not wish to come forward, the Diocese does not plan to further investigate this incident. The Diocese is grateful that a priest was able to exercise his ministry in this manner and requests prayers for healing of the accident victim."

Adair described the priest as being between 60 to 65 years of age, 5'6", olive skin and had a thick accent. He was dressed in a traditional black shirt and pants, white collar with a silver, older looking cross around his neck.

Also note cars were 1/4 mile away from scene both ways. Rescuers and police said no cars left and no one seen the priest leave the scene. This was also reported on FOX NEWS... About 20 miles from my house.

How do you define a miracle? God and Jesus and the deciples performed miracles to convince observers of their authenticity. some folks will claim that the sun rising is a miracle.

Mystery solved.

The “angel priest” who appeared at the scene of a Missouri car crash, anointed and prayed with the teenage victim, then vanished has been identified as Rev. Patrick Dowling of the Jefferson City Diocese.

A press release provided to FoxNews.com by the diocese said Father Dowling had been travelling Highway 19 between Mass assignments in northern and central Missouri when he arrived near the crash scene Aug. 4.

The arrival of the unidentified priest, who seemed to come out of nowhere, then attend to the victim before disappearing just as mysteriously, touched off nationwide speculation about the identity of the “angel” cleric.

Dowling actually identified himself in a comment posting on a story about his actions on the National Catholic Register website Friday night. The posting, one among many, appeared to go unnoticed for several days.

_“I had Mass in Ewing MO as the regular priest was sick,” he wrote. “As I was returning, I arrived at the scene. The authorities were redirecting traffic. I waited till it was possible to drive up closer. I parked behind a large vehicle about 150 yards from the scene. I asked the Sheriff’s permission and approached the scene of the accident.

“I absolved and anointed Katie, and, at her request, prayed that her leg would not hurt. Then I stepped aside to where some rescue personnel and the (rescue helicopter) pilot were waiting, and prayed the rosary silently.

“I left when the helicopter was about to take off, and before I got to my car…”

The Archdiocese said Dowling, a native of Kilkenny, Ireland, was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Jefferson City, Mo., in 1982. He has served at parishes in Moberly, Monroe City, Indian Creek, Milan, Unionville and Eldon, Mo., and in the diocese’s mission parishes in Marcona and Nasca, Peru.

He is currently serving in prison ministry and in parish ministry to Spanish-speaking Catholics.

Family and friends of the victim, 19-year-old Katie Lentz of Quincy, Mo., had said they hoped to find the priest and thank him.

Rescuers told Fox4KC _said a 26-year-old driver crossed the center lane and hit Lentz' car head-on. Authorities spent about 45 minutes trying to cut her out of the car, but the metal on her older car dulled the equipment._

She asked the rescuers to pray with her and at that point the priest appeared.

Adding to the mystery, Fire Chief Raymond Reed said the department took 80 photos of the scene and the priest did not appear in any of them._

i believe in miracles too but don't believe God is performing any now. He is working in mysterious ways to carry on his plan for this world. He is author of countless coincidents that leave us puzzeled. that's my take on it.

HE CAME OUT OF NO WHERE ,HE JUST HAPPENED TO HAVE ANOINTING OIL WITH HIM,HE WAS COMING FROM SOMEWHERE THAT HE HAD NEVER BEEN BEFORE ,GOD HAD HIM WALK FROM A LONG WAYS AWAY TO GET TO THE ACCIDENT.WHEN HE ASKED THE POLICE OFFICER IF HE COULD JUST GO PRAY FOR THAT GIRL AND HE LET HIM , THEN AS THE PRIEST WAS PRAYING A AWSOME CALM CAME OVER EVERYONE THERE,AND THERE WERE PICTURES OF THE ACCIDENT BEING TAKEN EVEN AS THEY WERE PRAYING "CLOSE UPS " AND THE PREIST DIDNT SHOW UP ON THE PICTURES OF ANY OF THEM FOR SOME REASON,THE EQUIPMENT THE FIRE FIGHTERS WERE USING STARTED WORKING ,AND THEY GOT THE GIRL OUT OF ONE OF THE WORST WRECKAGE THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED AND SHE LIVED THROUGH IT ,,,,,,THAT MY FRIEND ALL THAT WAS DONE ,,WAS A MIRICALE FROM GOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I believe every time a baby is born that is a miracle...god doesn't advertise his work. Not everyone sees a certain miracle BUT he does not stop performing them...

if you believe a miracle is everything that happens, then your discounting the real miracles. if you say a childs birth is a miracle then you must agree tha the suns' rising is also a miracle. i agree these are examples of God's mighty work but not that they are miracles. a miracle is when the laws of nature are suspended so that a dead is done to show that God is in charge is more of a miracle.
