(1)What are the difference in the way a cur and hound hunt? (2)Are curs fairly loyal to one handler or can anyone just grab them up and hunt them? (3)How well do they transition from squirrels in the day to coons at night? (4)How do they handle hunting them with a hound? Lots of questions I know, I have a few more just needing some info. Thanks in advance.

From my experience a cur wants to please you more than most hounds . As far as liking one person to hunt for I have seen it in both. The curs we hunt seem to always hunt with us the most the hounds I have ever had hunted themselves. I have only been In curs for a few years but any that we have had that will tree squirrels will tree coon but only one was a bust in there coon treeing cur and she died as a pup. We tried to keep her off them because she was young and wanted to really use her nose and wanted to get her more on her eyes and ears for squirrel. But she would flat run a coon and slam a tree naturally she was going to be fun. It's all up to the individual I guess we like them to hunt with us and out to about 200 yards.

i have one that will not hunt for anyone else. Had a guy take her out and she never got over 50 yrds from him and never made a tree, she is not a bit shy or timid she is just mine. I pulled up and when she saw me she went to hunting and we knocked out 7 squirrels in no time. I have another that will hunt with and for anyone, so its just depends on the dog. Far as cur vs hound...curs don't hunt like hounds or at least the dogs I have been with don't. My dogs have hound in them but they are very cur like in looks and in traits. So my advice would be to hunt with some cur guys day and night and see what you like. I hunted hounds for 24 yrs and I don't have a deep desire to own another. I hunt hounds for a few guys but I don't own one. Best wishes on your journey and God bless.

I ran hounds for 25 years. Got my first cur 3 years ago and I don't see myself getting another hound.

To me these curs just want to hunt with me or do whatever I'm doing. They want to please you handle great if messed with . We had hounds that handled good to but took a lot of work the ones my brother hunted handled the best no leash required. He had one hound that we would turn our pups loose and he would just stand there behind the truck wanting to go but wouldn't till he was told. If you get around some curs you will see the only thing I have noticed is you have to be a little more patient with them in the beginning let them figure out what you want you can't correct them as rough as a hound seems like they take it heart. I have two female pups about four months old they have just been played with and socialized have put a few squirrel hides up and let them find them and they have caught on quick they will find them and stay but not bark today I saw a gray squirrel out in the yard went out cut them loose they were just kinda playing till they hit the scent both found tree he went up and stayed up on it but again didn't bark one would look at me run to me then back to the tree and look up all over trying to find it the other just stayed at the tree smelling and looking they have an idea of want we are doing but haven't barked treed yet I am very pleased on the way they act time will tell. But I have noticed if they catch wind of it they are going to try like hell to find it.

I like the way mine hunts,he cuts and slashes threw the woods on a dead run hunts the entire woods out ,right now he only ranges out 200 yrds at the most,but that's fine with me ,it will probably keep me and him out of trouble because I don't have large blocks to hunt.
