Ron, I had the same problem except for my situation was my wife wouldn't let me take her good camera out hunting. she told me to get my own if I was going to get it muddy lol, so I bought an old cell phone for 40 bucks on ebay but didn't activate the phone part of it and just use it for the camera, I think it has 8 megapixels. It takes really good pictures and has good video quality at night. cheap, effective and keeps me in my wife's good graces.

Ron a good camera is needed. But if you get some one to go with you. And when you get to the tree. Have them turn there light wide open. And point it on the ground towards the dogs tree. And turn your light on bright. And have it on the tree and not on the dog. And this will give you some good pictures.

Canon makes the best nighttime cameras ... and alot of the high dollar features or megapixles you don't need .

Mine is an old Canon , maybe 6 megapixel .... the led lights help , I have a headlamp and handheld LED that I put on the dog .

Most of my pics I don't even have to fidget with .. what you see is what they looked like when snapped .
