NORTHERN REX fans

I want to hear everyones input on Rex and his offspring.

The good, bad, and the ugly.

Ive hunted with rex bred dogs since Ive been coonhunting almost 10 years ago, and they have been a real pleasure to hunt. My dogs also are bred with ACE outcrosses ( Grove River Rex for example ) Would like to get input on other preferences on rex crosses and why.

Thanks

rex dogs

Have hunted with a few of Rex offspring and will always have some in my breeding program. No nonsence coondog with a lot of hunt and track speed.Very accurate and independent. Also are good treedogs.
BAD(some may think)If you are not ready to go hunting don't turn one of these hounds loose they have more go and stamina then most Walkers. If coons aren't moving they will get out of the pocket quick. They may need a tighter handle.Kinda like a thoroughbred horse.IMO

I had a half sister to Rex. I had been looking for a dog like her for twenty years. Houndy looking, male type horn on her, TONS of hunt, and a tree dog extraordinaire. She had intelligence and handled like a dream. When she died just short of the same thing that killed a few dogs in that line (bloat) I almost quit. I didn't realize what I had at the time. I'm not as big a Rex fan as I am what is behind him. The male I am hunting now is doubled up on those lines and it shows in the same traits.

Fog

My male Foggy is off of Rex. I am a huge fan of this line. Not only Rex but Buck and Buck II also. I have had the priveledge to hunt with old Buck,Buck II and Rex and will always have this line in my kennel. My Fog dog is a great coondog with alot of nose, the ability to use it and a nice stayput treedog that sounds like a hound should. He is also reproducing pretty darn good. Rex dogs usually have alot of hussle are good track dogs and accurate tree dogs that are independant and usually hold alot of pressure. Most are houndy lookin with houndy mouths. This line does have the tendancy to have some hounds with monkey faces or high tan on the face. Some people dont like this but i will say every one i have had that was monkey faced made a good coondog.

I cant say enough about Rex blood. Drive and track speed and very consistent coondogs. Been hunting them for awhile now. Only fault I have noticed in (some) Rex blood is being a little loose on the tree. Also seen it corrected for a female directly out of Rex who died the year she had it all clickin, would have gave odds on her winning the world hunt the year she died. I think she was 4 with I think 4 wins towards grand and never really got hunted right but 1 kill season. Fastest track dog I ever seen. Also hunted for years with a direct son of Rex. Best dog I ever followed to this day. Nothing flashy, grub out any track any conditions any time of year and have the meat. Truly amazed me, seen him on 2 blanks and hunted with him for 4 or 5 years, I hear he slick treed some when he was younger but I never seen it.

one hunt

I drew out with Rex in an off kennel 50$. He looked descent, ha d the cast won till the last tree, for some reason he let the two get him. My dog was treed a half mile in,on a den.. this was toward the end of his competition hunting,I think that only needed like 125 to make him a silver champion, would have loved to draw him in his prime, that would have been fun.
Oh and Jeff was a true sportsman, wouldnt mind draw in out with him again...

I hunted with several dogs out of Rex. They hunted good, could run a track, and were nice tree dogs. I still got some Rex blood here. I dont think you can go wrong with this blood.

tree dog

Rex was a real nice tree dog. I was fortunate enough to be along the very first time rex got hunted. this was before Jeff owned him. He was 5 months old had never seen a cage coon, the guy who owned him wanted to carry him along just to get him in the woods. My Zip dog i had back then treed along with another young female i owned and we got about 100 yds from the tree and Rex took off and the next thing we hear is a long bawl locate and he went to treein every breath like he had been doin it his whole life. Got there and he was stretched up as high as he could lookin strait up not missin a bark. petted all the dogs up cause we saw the coon and led them away from the tree about 100 yards and turned them loose. My two females went huntin but Rex went back and loaded up on that same tree all by himself, we had to go back and get him cause he wasnt goin anywhere. I think bein put in competition at such a young age made him a little leary about wantin to tree with other dogs but he wasnt a bit mean. He would try to get by himself cause this line is naturally independant but also cause he didnt want to get chewed on.

Thanks to the discussions and much appreciated advice from Steven Gamble , KT,Dean Miller and couple other highly successful breeders and or handlers.I believe I have found what I want in a line of comp. dogs. REX,ACE and Cane.I have got this with Dan.D's FOG(REX) X SHAY(CANE) and thru the ZENA and GIRL by CANE (both out of SPICE,an excellent reproducing daughter of ACE) crossed with TEX (a REX bred dog). Time will tell, but I am very happy so far.I think the add'tn of REX to the CANE-ACE Blood is the Key.JMO. Hardly a secret......Top Reproducers= ACE,CANE and REX............
