For his age, he is coming along great! Just keep taking him out and try and take him some alone around swamps or feeders or wherever there are plenty of coon. Give him time and be patient...hes doing great for being so young.

so much discouraging. need to encourage folks to do/hunt what they like, not what you like. if he likes redbones, keep at it. from what the other folks have said you're one the right track. not all dogs come out of the womb treeing, but then not all will burn out at 2yo either. hunt what you like, feed what you like, show what you like, to heck with the rest. good luck.

Hunt him

He needs lots of nights in the woods alone to get comfortable with going far. About those trees that he doesn't tree very hard, he probably isn't so sure of, or they don't have a lot of strong scent on them. When he gets more confident all that will get better. He'll probably make you a real nice accurate dog once you've put the time in.

after looking at what you emailed me, he has a base but personally I'd like to see more hunt dogs in there. I'd just say he either came from some backyard breedings and just doesn't have the competition drive that the bigger redbone breeders are breeding for these days. I had one at his age that did the same thing, and after 30 days of hard hunting and droppin coon he was a nice little dog, unfortunately I lost him throughout the winter and I cant tell you how he finished out but I'd say just keep huntin him, he's young yet

All I'm saying is that if you do t LIKE the fact he is standing around your feet or won't tree the way you want or what ever it is then I wouldn't waist the time, I used to love red dogs and I still do but honestly, you don't see to many that will perform like a red tick or walker or any other like that. That's why I switched. But if you like the long nights of having to walk your dog into the woods so he can hit a track then that's fine.

Like a few of us said, keep taking him too the woods. People hung up on breeds are really holding themselves back. I grew up with a grand dad that hunted redbones and blue ticks...they were awesome. They had to have the meat as he sold pelts. Ive had red, black, and a few walkers. Judge each dog on their ability, not their breed. Good luck with your hound, sounds like its coming along great. It will go further out as it gets older.

I understand what your saying but I didn't read anywhere where he said that the dog stood at his feet, I read where the dog stood at the tree.

every time it gets thrown out does it keep going or come back
a young dog or a pup that gets lost and has to find its way back
builds confidence

I agree.Another thing . A Young dogs degree of excitability at the tree due to the strength of the track scent may cause them to tree harder. As time passes and your dog ages you will be able to determine if your dog is on a cold tree or a hot tree. Also you will be able to tell if he is sure of himself and he believes the coon is there or he is guessing at a tree.

Forget those other wise guys .If you like Red dogs that is your choice. That is what makes the world go around.Everybody is different.

He was asking how to get him to go hunting. He said he would only get out around 75 yards. I used to have a redbone just like that named Hershey.

I just got a redbone dog that is a year old he doesn't tree hard everytime either it's pretty frustrating cause I know he can do it and sound good it seems like its with the scent cause he trees where he smells the scent it seems like or do y'all think its a confidence problem?
