No good news here.
I have heard and read all the standard explanations and excuses, hoarding, panic buying, ammo manufacturers doing their best , etc. I no longer believe a word of it.
22 ammo is the basic root of the shooting sports, nearly all legal and legitimate shooting starts with the 22, be it rifle or handgun. Making this ammo impossible to buy or , even better, too expensive for the common working person to afford would be among the most effective and least noticeable means to further stifle legitimate shooting sports in this country. Once you eliminate the legitimate use of firearms and nothing is left but criminal use, it will be a cakewalk to ban ownership by citizens.
Our present Chief Executive has accepted the fact that he will never succeed in accomplishing any kind of legislative means to eliminate private firearms ownership, neutralizing our weapons by making ammo impossible to purchase is the new gun control.
The most disappointing part in all of this is the role our ammo manufacturers have accepted in making this work. These companies are not being run by our friends in the shooting sports anymore.

I think JiM is on to something..

The AR's are pretty much price/availability back to where they were pre-sandy hook.

The lack of ability to catch up with .22 demand is too weird to be a coincidence.

Long story but I happened to have a lengthy phone conversation with the Head of Distribution for Federal ammunition back in May. It was quite enlightening.

The first thing is the "government is buying up all the ammo" theory. He indicated that over the past couple decades government purchases of ammo account for roughly 1% of all ammo manufactured and that is pretty much the same today. 99% of all ammo is bought by non-government entities. Even if the government doubled or tripled their purchases it would still only be 2% or 3% of the market.

He also reminded me that 4 years ago, 2009, after O was sworn in that there was a nearly identical situation with ammunition (but people have short memories) and 2 years ago they couldn't give .22 ammo away. All the panic hoarders had stocked up in 2009-2010 so there was little demand in 2011. Now with the re-election of O and Sandy Hook and all of the talk of gun control, etc. we are back to panicked hoarding. In a year or 2 the shelves will be full and there will be a glut of ammo.

He also indicated that with the exception of "freak" years like '09 or this year that .22 ammo sales are pretty much static every year. So the industry is not in a rush to start hiring and building new facilities to meet current demand since they know it is an anomoly and in a year or two the rush will be over and demand will return to more normal levels.

The guy seemed pretty straightforward and I couldn't see that he had any reason to blow smoke.

I do see it easing a little. I placed a large ammo order back in January and it was all backordered at that time. I recieved the .22 portion of the order a month or so back and have started recieving parts of the .223 and .308. So my guess in right now they are still 3-4 months backlogged.

You thought that Head Of Distribution would say " well, yes, we are colluding with the current Administration to deprive the private citizens of the cheapest ammo"?
Myself, I don't believe a word the ammo companies are telling us.

Hoarding Ammo

Go to the junk yard and look through all the old trucks glove boxes and ash trays. Bound to find some bullets under the seat too. Lol.

I am not trying to be argumentative, just relaying what I was told. Everyone is entitled to thier own opinion.

However, from a business point of view I can't see the logic in colluding with a 1% customer (government) that is vocally and actively trying to destroy my business and my industry at the expense of 99% of my customers?

The gentleman also discussed other political and legislative topics that I won't put on here but that led me to believe this was not the case.

I understand that everyone wants a villian to blame it on. I actually think it is a lot to do with the guy that shoots 500 rounds a year (or less) but now feels the need to stockpile 5000 rounds because he heard on the internet or from his buddy that there is a crisis.

On a side note, when the ammo craze got going Federal made a corporate decision to hold back 10 million rounds of .22 for youth shooting organizations (boy scout camps, etc.) to insure that these youth/organiztions had a supply for their summer camps and activities. So I give them props for that.

I think the Ammo. manufactures have taken a page from OPECs playbook and have created a shortage simply to gouge the consumer. If they were interested in produceing enough rimfire ammo to meet demand at a reasonable price, those machines would be running around the clock.
I dont know about Jims theory of collusion, i think its simply a case of the opportunity presenting itself for the ammo companys to create a shortage and let the Govt. take the blame.
When the smoke clears there will once again be lots of ammo available and we will be content paying twice what we were before. Just think how happy you would be if you could buy gas for 2bucks a gallon, you have forgotten that it used to be a dollar...

Here in central Indiana it has been nuts the lengths people will go to. I've seen people argue over who got what. I just avoid the hassle and order it online.

Its simple to explain...The Constitution protects firearms, doesn't say anything about the ammo. They will make it so we can't find/afford ammo.

Several boxes of .270 ammo on our wall mart shelves, with shotgun ammo.

Glad I also have a good slug gun.

remember at the time of the Constitution, people were making their own ammo too, so there was no need to protect it.
