Ivomec Wormer

Ivomec oral- how much do you use and can it be mixed with anything to taste better?

Ivomec pour on- how much do you use and whats the best way to apply it?

Will this kill fleas also?

thanks

I use it starting at 6 months also I use 1/10 cc for every ten pounds so a 50lb dog gets a half a cc. I wouldnt think it would hurt any thing to mix it but I wouldnt think that its necessary. Im not sure but I dont think your supposed to use the pour on on dogs.

i have heard that the ivomec will burn the dogs vocal cords when given orally. some people mix it with a sweet tasting liquid (pepsi comes to mind) to dilute it a little and keep it from harming the dogs voice. some say it will cause the dog to lose a little volume. i don't know first hand because i inject mine in the hip. seems to work fine.

We use Feeder Pig injectable ivomec. (but give oral to dogs) It's the same stuff as the cattle variety but the cattle type is stronger and must be mixed with something such as the post above states due to it being more 'condensed'. Piglet is easier to administer.

I give 1/2 cc to my little dogs (jrts and small beagle mix) and 1 cc to my adult coonhounds. I give it the 3rd of every month except during the dead of winter and now and again, I switch things up with Panacur, just not during mosquito season as the ivomec also protects against heartworm. It protects against fleas, ticks as well in addition to the worms. It does not get certain types of worms or giardia so you need to switch off now and then for complete protection. I also have fecals run a couple times a year just to see where we sit on such things.

As for dosage, etc. I give what my vet has instructed me. He gives it to his dogs as well. Though he only disclosed this over dinner with my Dad one evening because he could get in trouble for officially recommending something for off-label usage like that. But... it does not mean that you can't tell your vet your intentions and get his/her reaction. They may be able to give you more advice that way.

I've heard of people mixing it with molasses. I don't bother. I give it (orally!) and then give them a dog biscuit to get the taste out of their mouths. Believe it or not, I have a couple who seem to like it. Blech!

Tip: It can be hard to pull that stuff from the bottle into your syringe. Push a syringe full of air into it first releases it somewhat so it doesn't take so long to pull out.

DO NOT GIVE IVOMEC TO ANY COLLIE BREEDS!!!! That includes border collies and shelties. And do NOT give to cats, either.

Would love to know if anyone has any tips for worming cats cheaply, though. I just got blessed with a new litter of kittens from a rescue cat and I'm clueless. They are 5 wks old and need worming. Advice?

Janet

I dont know about vocal cord ive got a male that barked alot when he was about 3 mnts old and it hasnt seemed to hurt him any more all my other dogs do fine on it Ill try mixing it if thats what say I havent been doing it nearly as long as you guys..
Thanks

same here.

my vet told me that he gives his personal hog dogs this every 60 days rather than every 30 days w/ the same results in control of heartworms w/o has much chance of damage of internal organs (something about the larva's cycle being able to be in contolled on this interval???????).

if yall know a vet that wouldnt mind commenting on this ask them and post their response pls.

1% ivermectin injectable solution will not hurt a dogs vocal chords. If you want to do a search, you will find where vets on this site and coondawgs.com have stated this. It is a 1% solution, that means it is already diluted 99 to 1 with Propylene Glycol. Granted if you mix it with something sweet, I'm sure it becomes more palatable. This has been a discussion for years on this board. Once I even put some on my tongue to disprove this myth. The only taste I got was bitterness, there was no burning what so ever and I tested negative for heartworms the next trip to the doc.
I do not think it in anyway hurts a dogs liver when dosed properly. It is the same in ingredient that is in heartguard. Some vets use it to treat certain types of mange and give it for 30 days in a row with no adverse effects.

I use the 1% cattle solution and draw it from the bottle and squirt it on their dry feed then mix in a little warm water. The food part is the same every day and the dose comes on the 1st of each month. Likely not for picky eaters.

Funny story on giving/getting Ivomec...

I used to raise dairy goats. Had a ramp with 1/2 door going up to the multi-goat milk stand. As they came to the tiny ramp door, I'd give the Ivomec and then let them up for their grain. Well, Miss Melody got her Ivomec and scrunched up her face in disgust and horror that was poster perfect priceless yet my heart went out to her. I went to apologize and held both her cheeks in my hand and say "Ooohhh ...." and SPIT! Yup, mouth wide open to recieve her full dose of Ivomec. LOL

I had wanted to say "Oooohhh you poor baby" but that aint exactly what came out of my mouth after I got Ivomec'd. LOL Nope, don't taste good at all and I guarantee it didn't hurt my vocal cords any. hehehe

?

If I am reading things right you use the bottle marked injectable but give it to dogs oral.

Is this right or do they make some specifically for oral use?

Thanks for all the help.

You use the 1% ivermectin injectable cattle solution but give it orally at a dosage of 1/10th cc to 10 pounds of body weight. So a 50 lb dog would get 1/2 cc once a month.

You can also use the Hores Paste 1.87% Which is Apple flavored, you give 1 click on the stem about 1/8" there are 18 doses in a 1250lb tube,do the math. My Vet told me this was not enough to do any damage he suggested to use every 6 to 8 weeks not needed from Nov until march in the Northern States no longer between doses. less than or around $20.00 at almost any feed store.

One time I used the horse paste and accidently pushed the Whole tube all 1250 lb dose down my dogs throat, she just turned 9 and this was 5 years ago and still going strong, now I use the injectible mixed with gatorade most of the time.

In my humble opinion, some of you are giving too much. A small amount will do the trick. We have been giving it to some of our old dogs all of their lives with no harm. It doesn't affect mouth volume. We put it on a piece of bread for our dogs but Penny won't take it that way. She gets a squirt. We have never had a dog with heartworms.

My Opinion

I give my dogs 1cc after a year old. I have used Ivomec for several years on coyoted hounds and the last 6 on coon hounds. I also use the pour on for the spring and summer months when the ticks, flys and fleas are so bad. I put mine in a spray bottle and spray them once a month from their shoulders to their hips on top of their back. I havce never lost any mouth nor lost any hair. I highly recommend using this wormer and pour on as flea and tick
