Is it just me?

Is it just me or is coon hunting a dying breed? Because I spend most of my hunting nights in the woods by my self. Every time I ask one of my friends to go out they pass it up. If somone asked me to go out I'd drop everything and get the dogs ready! It's a sad world we live in anymore all the kids playing video games instead of being outside enjoying the great outdoors!

That's exactly what I mean, the other night I hunted for 6 hours straight with one of my only friends that likes to run the dogs anymore. I don't even wanna see the future of coon hunting because I'm afraid it's just gonna get worse and worse

I'm glad to hear that! There's not a whole lot of young people that go hunting anymore, he's one of a kind!

I disagree that it's the economy to, in my opinion people are just straight up lazy anymore! I'm 15 and working two jobs at a bait shop and a farm bailing hay! And I still manage time to hunt my dogs!

I think your answer is much more complex than that. Maybe other people just do not enjoy it like you do, reckon that is possible. You would drop everything and get the dogs ready???? Maybe other folks have more important priorities.
I hear the excuses from people I hunt with, too hot, ticks, snakes, you name it. I have used those excuses sometimes too. I have even plain outright said I was not interested in going.
Some folks like to watch golf on TV, should you be questioned about the fact you do not like golf.
Sounds like you wanted to go hunting but could not find anyone else that wanted to accompany you. That is what we call "sour grapes".
It does not make the world a sad place just because their idea of fun is different from yours as long as they are not hurting someone else.

I think it is all of the above. I see a lot of young people at hunts all across my state, all different ages too. We have some great youth hunts in my area, as well. Its like baseball, kids play it at all levels, and at the end some stick with it through adult hood and some don't.
All we can do is expose them and see who shakes out. Tom

I think the thing hurting coon hunting the most is places to hunt... I love it and come in some nights and just want to quit because of the lack of hunting space... I think if we had unlimited hunting space and coon we would have unlimited hunters

Electronic entertainment is the reason for the downturn in hunting/fishing license sales. All the other stuff, gas prices, places to hunt, etc, these things are complaints but they don't stop many of us. TV, videos, computers, video games, these things are what entertain today and it's not just kids. Want proof? An overwhelming majority the Amish/horse&buggy Mennos hunt and/or fish. The majority of the rest of us today don't. Take away the electronic entertainment, what is left? The outdoors.

I am forced to use computers due to work. I will admit I play on them, but not near as much as back in the 90s.

I have always told my sons that electronics are the weed of the 21st century. Now, I see on a news story that the medical community has come up with a new disease. It is called electronic dementia.

through my 20 or so years of running dogs ive noticed that it takes a special person to truly love it and enjoy it...

biggest thing is its done when its dark out...many people are truly afraid of the woods at night...they may never admit it..but its a big factor...

there is a fair big of walking involved..not much sitting around...these hills will knock the wind out of most..i run em every night..i try to slow down for whoever may be along..but do it 2-3-4-5x in a night and it whoops em...

many just dont "get it" especially when i dont even carry a gun...

you really have to love and understand hound hunting to enjoy running a coon dog...

ive taken numerous people with me...a few showed potential and it soon faded...maybe they will come back to it later in life....

it is a time consuming activity...and takes place at a time when most would rather be doing something else...sleeping...on a date..watching TV..at the bar...whatever...

i was brought up coon hunting...there was about 5 years of my life i didnt have a coon dog in my life...once i met my buddy who had a dog, i realized how much i missed it...now, 10 years after meeting him, ive hunted with him, hunted his dogs, and now trained and have my own dog...

theres nothing else id rather do...ive said it a bunch of times...i'd give up ALL my different hobbies if i could keep a good coon dog and good ground to hunt em every nite for the rest of my life...and i am the guy with a ton of different hobbies...from running dogs to trapping to most all forms of hunting, archery, flintlock, most forms of fishing, precision reloading etc etc etc...

but most people just dont get it...and i think it kinda always been that way...but now more and more people just arent hunting and living an outdoor lifestyle let alone coon hunting..

i agree with that 100% and i also agree that it does take a person who truly loves coon hunting to go out every night and not complain, i never really thought about that to much.

1. money is always a factor . Dog food has become expensive , trucks are expensive and traveling anywhere is expensive .

2. Different life styles these days . Jobs us older guys worked and raised families on either aren't there or not wanted by the kids we busted our butts to send to college .

3. turn those computers , games and the electricity that keeps them charged and running off and even a coonhunter would find life challenging these days .

4. Fewer people live on a farm or in a agricultural community and never learn about animals except in a zoo .

5. Many people (even politicians) are from or descendant's from other countries that never hunted anything .

6. Most laws are in direct conflict with everything we do concerning owning and hunting dogs from 3 dogs laws where we live , barking, difficulty getting affordable shots and licenses to expensive vet bills and look out if one bites or scratches anybody no matter the reason .

7. After a lifetime of this I still don't like skitters ,ticks ,snakes ,gators .porkys ,too hot , too cold ,etc. etc. etc.

8. Maybe the next 68 years will be better

I have one of those kids that would rather play video games then go hunting. I have been a diehard deer hunter for many years & would love to see him shoot a giant buck instead of me…He has absolutely no interest!
Last season a friend of mine was laid up & asked if I wanted to hunt his hound. My son & daughter both asked if they could go along. They loved it!!! Needless to say I went out and bought a couple hounds after that. I was more than willing to give up some deer hunting time to get them interested in the outdoors. I am thankful that buddy gave me the opportunity to reignite the coon hunting passion in me & also get them involved.

My dad was the same way! He would rather see me get a deer than him, I've been hunting with him ever since I was 8 years old, he never owned coon dogs but I got really interested in it when I was 13 and now I have a nice redbone, even tho my dad never comes out hunting with me he still supports on what I do. He takes me to all my shows and stuff. He would rather see me having fun doing what I love than anything else.

No one around here will let you hunt or fish. There is less land and more people.

Very hard sport to get involved in from scratch....and even harder to maintain if you want to be any good at it. A gun, a bow, a boat, a fishing rod, or anything else doesn't care if it sits and you take 2 years off.....a dog does. Dog running is year round while other game has more or less specific seasons where when its over, its over and you get a break.

Coonhunting for years on end can be very exhausting and unless your moving dogs in and out its like watching your favorite movie night after night with simply a different twist of drama on some nights. I enjoy it and I do it out of a commitment to the dogs I have but if I was starting from square one....no way.
