swampers, how do you get to your dog?

i went hunting with some guys in a swamp. the dogs treed 900yrds deep. the water and mud was way over our hip waders. there wasn't enough water for a boat and the mud was too deep and soft to walk on. with out a pontoon boat, canoe, kayak or chest waders, how can you get to your dog? to me it looked like we either had to leave the dogs to come out on their own or find a little boat or slog in and dame the snakes. how do you swamppers handle this situation? do you keep an inflatable boat in your truck, chest waders, what?

Walk. I try to stay away from the swamps. To many gators down here in the summer. But when it does happen we hoof it, water mud snakes and gators.

I usually only hunt swamps in the winter and hunt them about 80% of the time in summer.... I go to almost every tree they make but have had to call them in a few times.... usually around here if it has water on it you can get thru it... its when the water gets off of it that you will sink out of sight... other places differ to that but if its not firm enough to support you most of the time you can crawl or swim thru it... I have done both

swamps

We try to train our dogs to come when called.Around here the swamps are just like what croatankid described-----you can take 3 steps into 'em and sink in mud up to your azz.Believe me---it ain't no fun goin'to a dog that is in deep.Especially if your like me--two rods and 8 screws in your back.

Learn what you can step on that will support you such as tuff of grass, bushes and trees. Most areas like that are not all that large and you can often find a way around if you hunt it enough.

for those that go to the dogs in the swamps, it sounds like you do a combination, swim, wade, slog, crawl. i guess once you get soaked in mud you can't get any wetter. in that condition you can't be carrying a light or it would get wet. you can't carry a gun for the snakes and gators or it'd be in the water.
i just learned that the guys i hunted with last night went home and got an inflatable dingy and floated to the dogs.

I pull the ole TT out and hit the tone button once. She stops treeing to listen for me. I then say here Mandy here and she comes back. I hunt a lot of swamps all year and can get around most of them but not going to risk my life to cross one. I hunt alone most of the time and not going to risk my life. Who is coming to help when your alone? just not worth it!

Like the man said put on your big boy britches and get neck deep the dog did his job for you The least you can do is go check his tree for him I've had to crawl on my hands and knees for 75 yards into my dog only way I was getting to him without sinking in the Swamp Got to him and had to crawl right back out and I can call my dog off a tree just isn't fair to him to do that

I've seen Clyde get deep in the swamps and the boy **** near drowned in my hometown creek but his dog treed and he had to put in his part of the deal I would have been right beside him if I wasn't guiding across the county that night Y'all boys can have them mountains it takes a dog and a man to hunt these Southwest Georgia Swamps

i agree with lil-e. i hunt alone and i'm not taking a chance on getting snake bit or drowned to satisfy my dog or to prove i'm a man. i think it's great if you can train your dog to come off a tree.
the dogs were hunting last night didn't even stop to take a deep breath when we yell for them or shot the gun. it's like we weren't even in the world. they were locked on.
i think keeping a pair of chest waidders in the truck might be the way to go.

you guys need to listen to LIL-E !!!!get an e-collar with a tone button and use it.a lot safer and won`t ruin a good hunt.i tone mine till it stops barking then call it then tone it again.she will come cause she don`t want what comes next.

It,s a wonder that Randall and myself have not been eaten by a gator. As youngesters we did not have enuff sense to slow down and think about all the hidden dangers in deep water....Teaching a dog to come may just save a mans life ,certainly makes for a better hunt.Back in March we had dogs across deep water,I called Bo to come to me and had him leashed IN A FEW MINUTES....The other dog was handled by a swimmer with nothing but a small head lamp and a dog leash....NAKED AS THE DAY HE WAS BORN...I was the judge and as I left after the hunt I kicked myself for allowing a swimmer to retrieve a dog,,,,IT IS EASIER TO LET THE DOG SWIM TO YOU,,,,TEACH THE DOG THE COME COMMAND......YOUR LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT...

I wouldn't go with the chest wadders too easy to drown if you step in a hole and fill them up.

Handling is the biggest thing you can do.. Our dogs come back when called..They can be treed and will break and return if called, sometimes in the swamp its the only way to get them
