I might shoot out 4 or 5 a year unless I am working a young dog. If I am working a young dog depends where I am hunting, some areas I shoot none because of neighbors. Others as I feel the urge, lol.

During season ill shoot one or 2 a week. Out of season I don't shoot any. Just my preference. I know others around here shoot 4-5 a week. Atleast that's what they say. If I'm hunting a young pup and they are doing good ill shoot a few more than that.

In season how ever many times we turn loose and tree a coon it's coming out. We usually kill 7 or 8 a week just depends on how many times we hunt during the week.

Out of season we kill one every once in awhile

During the season it depends on what dog I'm hunting and where I'm hunting to. Some spots I dont kill more than a coon or two in some spots. The last few years we've killed 20 - 40 coons a season. I don't kill any out of season execept if I have a nuisance permit during the early fall for any of the farms I hunt.

I don't eat them that much any more so I rarely shoot one unless I have someone who wants them. I don't take them in the off season at all. They are having little ones and nursing kits. So in a sense it would not only be against the law, but almost stupid to knock them out during spring and summer. Coon not as thick down here as they were where I was from in NC so I try to conserve on our lease as much as I can. I like having plenty of coon to start young dogs.

i don't shoot any during the in season nor do i shoot any out of season. i don't even shoot possums. since i don't shoot them, i don't have to spend so much time seeking eyes. if the dogs say it's up there, i take their word for it. i praise them and move on and they seem to be ok with it. i still like having a pistol with me though.

Killed around 30 this past season....out of season??? Why risk it??? A good dog worth feeding don't need fur in its mouth IMO...I know many don't agree..I know some on here say they know they never tree the same coon twice because it gets shot the first time...

Depends on the season...my mood...fur prices...I don't kill coon in my spots close to the farm I like to hunt the rest of the year...I will kill em from other parts of the same woods I don't like to hunt..or travel to my "kill season spots".

Now that I am trapping fox and coyote and such I tend to kill a few coon through the season...

Only time I kill em "for the dog" is when they are just starting out...other than that I am killing em to skin...the dog can chew on them but he doesn't care to much at all unless it came out with a little fight left in it

Shooting coons

if you shoot thru summer you are killing babies and thinking of them starving to death is not very pleasant. Thank about that when you are shooting moma coons.

There is a hunting season for a reason, shot coons then.

training pups at 6, 7 months, a pup must have some coons and with baby stakes this happens . Coons shot out to pups. How many dogs are killed at young age because they were not mature enough to start yet. Start them latter and most make dogs. Often older men than me didn't start them till they were 16-18 months old and were mature enough to go on.

Things to think about, Jeff

Our season closes the last day of march. Then it opens up again July 1st. So we have a season that runs 9 months out of the year. Arkansas Coon is thick here. We shoot lots of them in season. We dont kill none out of season no sense in it. They are rasin kittens at that time.

You cant get in trouble in NC for posting a pic of a coon in a trap out of season as one replied. who knows when and or where you set it.

AND some hav license to trap out of season , farmers..etc.

PS i know game wardens in NC and tight with Cops.

I am saying I know the Cops and Game wardens so you will know I have ask and know the law. I DO NOT break the law cause i know them. I am stating the previous post, due to the fact a fellow North Carolinian posted a false statement.

I do not think you know one third as much as you think you do! I know the high Sheriff in the county in which I live, fairly well, and that would not stop me from getting arrested on a warrant that his office has a duty to serve! You should never ask to know the law, read and do your own due diligence!
A live trap is in no way a recognized manner of catching game in NC under ANY circumstance! If I am a farmer, I "might" get away with catching an animal with a live trap and a depredation permit but only if I dispatch the animal immediately!
I do not know that a proper permit would even allow you to use a live catch trap in N.C.
