I carry aspirin with me in the woods and give them one as soon as I notice they have been bit and one the next morning, that's usually all it takes, but depending on the snake and the dog you may have to give them 2 a day for a few days. I have never had to carry one to the vet for a snake bite, but that's copper heads and water mockisons.

aspirin

Never give people aspirin to dogs. It thins the blood in a dog and can cause them to bleed out integrally.Give a low dose aspinin. I give my dogs a shot of antibiotics and make sure they are comfortable and they up and around in a few hrs. Copper heads won't kill a dog but a rattler can take them out.

snake bites

After a dog gets bitten a couple times they build up an immunity to the venom and recover faster each time. But different snakes have different venom. Dogs learn to side step snakes because they can smell them. If I have a dog bitten I just put it in the box and let it cool down and don't put another dog in with it as the other dog might step on the snake bite.

i keep a syringe, w/o the needle, a small container of honey and some water. i also keep a few tabs of dexamethazone and benadryle. i crush the two tabs of dex and a tab of benedryle and put into syringe and then suck up a little honey and water and skirt into back of mouth. it's hard to make a dog take a tablet when they are stressed. this sounds like a lot but the water and honey are in tiny bottles and of course the tabs are small. your dog will probably survive with out all this but i want to do all i can to help my dogs.

I wondered if the walker I had wasn't attracted to snakes he got bit so often. He could have just been unlucky at four years old he had a head on with my neihbors ford truck and lost. Not a great competition dog but he liked me.

Snake bite Vaccine

There is a vaccine to help protect dogs against bites of the various rattlesnake species. Initially it requires 2 injections 1 month apart then a yearly booster. It can be given to dogs over 3 months of age. We have been using it for 3 years. 3 or 4 of our dogs have been bitten because we live in a snakey area. They swell up a little for a day or so then they are fine. They recommend giving Benadryl if a dog is bitten but we haven't always done that. I lost a dog from a horrible death from a rattlesnake bite years ago before the vaccine. I can't recommend it highly enough. Jeffers carries it. Probably some other vet supply places do as well.
