I got a pup that whenever she hits an open field, just runs like crazy. Its to the point where sometimes she wears herself out just running as hard as she can. This isnt an issue when shes trailing but if im not releasing her directly in front of timber or if she hits an open field before she finds a track, the nights over.

my pups does somthin like that only she runs the side of the field
till she gets to the back of the woods

Used to raise German Shorthairs.The field trial dogs would go to all corners of a 20 acre field and have it hunted out in 10 minutes.
Just a thought could be some of the bird dog and foxhound coming out.They bred a lot in to these modern hounds.

Try turning her gradually back from the woods. Cut her into the woods, then the next time cut her closer to the edge, and so on? Maybe she just isn't putting the woods is at the edge of the field together?

Shes bred right and comes from very respected stock and a great man so it is definitely not due to bird dog or running dog blood.

t.meyer, im not sure i understand your last sentence but sounds like you have a good idea there.

Sorry, let me try to be more clear. Start her where she can see the woods. I am assuming she has been ona tree before, she knows what the woods is all about. She just may not realize the woods are there. A good friend told me that we often need to think of a 1 year old as a young child, about 1st grade age. We have to make it a little more simple. Cut here about 20 feet from the woods, the following drop, at the next woods, drop her a little further back, and so on. Soon enough, you can dump her from the edge of the road, you will have trained here to get to the woods.

with mr beyer i always lead my dogs to the woodline if im in a big field exspecaly a young dog they can get on something you might not want lol but i have cut them and they go back in the feild and strike a coon but sounds like you need to lead him to the woodline a few times

I will take the advice here into practice. But how would you suggest I stop her when she hits an open field/clearing located in the woods? For example, the other day I took her out. I dropped her at the edge of the woods. She goes a little over a hundred yards out and hits savannah oak field thats about 7 acres or so and then just runs like crazy. I know shes not tracking because I've taken her out in the day and watched her and she is simply just running.

sounds like she also needs some basic obedience training. If my dogs are in earshot then they darnwell better come when called.

i would lead her in the woods before i turn her loose,i would also teach her to come to me when i called her.if shes bred right it want be long when all she will think about is treeing coons and running in a field want be so much fun for her. bond with her and it make her want to please you, and hunt her all you can, it will help her mature a lot faster.make sure your dog aint got worms.

She pretty good with basic obidence. I have no problem calling her off a track or when shes running, i just havent been because i didnt see the point. I'll keep hunting her and maybe she'll turn it around.

dont turn her loose in a field. take her to the edge of the woods and cut her. if she comes back out in the field just to run CORRECT her. wont take her long to figure out that she needs to be in the woods. Turning loose in fields is just asking for a play session for some dogs.

I wouldn't worry about it. Let her grow out of it. It's not a bad trait to have... Most people search for dogs with that much heart and desire. Would you rather have her walk beside you?

This might be a dumb question, but how often does she get turned loose? Had a female that acted stupid if she wasnt hunted down every night. Might help, no idea. Mine would run circles and cut up and act a fool. Might walk her to the wood line with a shock collar and if she turns to hit the open field bump her a little and call her back, then send her again. jmho
