Here is what I do. First try to see if anything will look, and i do use a colored lens during summer time. If no luck, then I start with a bright light working the light up the trunk, checking the trunk and branch crotches. Then I work my way out as best as I can on each individual large branch. I look for color changes between gray and brown, and look at details to see if I can see a tail or ear.
Finally if all that fails, and if the surrounding tree cover allows, I will shine the tree as I lead the dog away.
What i really don't like is when the surrounding tree cover and canopy blocks my view from even shining the tree the dog(s) is treed on.
