Dog supplements/energy

Do any of you that are hunting a dog 3-5 times a week plus going to a couple hunts a week give your dog any supplements or vitamins like dog bloom or wheat germ oil...if so do you see a difference and what are you giving them

All they need is a high quality meat based dog food and they will have plenty of energy to go all night every night. Save the money you would spend on a supplement and put it towards a higher quality dog food. I would say that not many people hunt a dog harder than I do and mine have enough energy to go from dark until daylight 5-7 nights a week.
Examples;
Native Level 3 or 4
Diamond Extreme Athlete

Ill agree with Nat on this one. People get all pissy when you talk about one dog food being better than another but the fact is eat McDonalds every day then go run a marathon..

I have tried about everything out there. My experience has been 1) they won't eat it, 2) it cost way too much for regular use, 3) it doesn't do a lick of good. The one and only "supplement" I have ever used that was cost efficient, readily eaten by the dog and made an noticeable difference is canned mackerel from WalMart which is prolly the best and cheapest power feed you will ever feed.

As Jim, I have tried most everything. I do use a supplement but it costs nearly 100 bucks for roughly a 4 month supply. It works but you better have a very solid understanding of canine biochemistry and feed an above average feed to begin with. I use it primarily to increase protein levels to repair muscle tissue from a heavy workload. The additional ingredient benefits are its fat content that readily converts to energy. It also has carbs in the proper form that a dog can use. Chelated minerals are like vitamin C to a dog. The only negative is its creatine content. You need to understand what creatine does and monitor the dogs water intake. I cut the recommended portion in half and this usually takes care of it and still realizes the benefit of the supplement. Long story short, they are out there, you just have to find one that works for your dog, you, and your wallet.

I agree that you should feed better rather than supplement, but the best supplement available is Annamaet Impact, the sled dog supplement, and it comes in 20lb pails for kennels as well as smaller packages. It is 48% protein and 30% fat. The dogs do backflips for it.

Lion Country Supply has it.

http://inukshukpro.com/buy-direct/

Here is a tip, especially for guys with a big kennel or who can get a group together.

You can't beat this deal on a hyper-performance food when you buy 65 bags direct.

Top food, only sold direct on skids.

Again, mackerel. Never seen a dog not clean up anything mixed with mackerel.

I used it when our bitch was bred. Diamond AE and 1/2 can of mackerel every day. She got way too fat, even for carrying pups but if you hunt her hard, as in 7 days a week, then she just gets hard. Ask Dwils, he seen her on mackerel and hunted with her. We just aren't hunting hard enough right now to use the mack plus we are feeding Dr Tims.

By tha way, that mackerel at Walmart is around $1.25- $1.35 per 15 ounce can. You're talking less than 5 bucks per week at the rate I fed it. 10 bucks if you fed a whole can every day but I was never that brave.

The cost of feeding Dr. Tim's ranges for about 60 cents a day to 90 cents a day, but the 90 cents is for a big wirehaired spinone at 93lbs.

No supplements and I don't have to drive anywhere to get the food. In the off season they get the less expensive 26/16 food.

Outside of Dr. Tim's I would use PMI Exclusive 30/20. This food hardly ever gets talked about but it is a great value food. It is a real find and easy to get from the feed stores carrying the PMI line.

Not likely.
If a dog has a b12 deficiency , anemia or some other sort of medical ailment, it can be beneficial but for a healthy dog, b 12 won't do a thing. Do the research.

High quality feed will give more energy then needed. I've been feeding black gold blue bag it's a 24/20 and mine never even get tired. That's hunting at least 4 drops a night 4 nights a week. But if you want to give them a boost get Forte. It's like dog crack.
